I enjoy social history so try and identify individuals who I can 'bring back to life' by weaving together lots of small pieces of information to generate a detailed biography. I love searching for missing evidence that breaks down a brick wall or sheds new light on someone's life. In summary, I'm a fine detail person!

If you decide to participate again in January's upcoming Connect a Thon, the registration this time will be somewhat different. (You can read about it here.) We would love to have you join us again, but whatever team you decide to join will be lucky to have you!

Hi Anne,

Thank you for all the work that you have done for the England Project. I do not seem to have had a response from you from the recent England Project check in.

If I do not hear from you within the next 2 weeks I will presume that you wish to leave the project. If you leave us, I hope that you will want to re-join us sometime in the future. You can do this by responding to our G2G post. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1516540/is-2023-your-year-to-join-the-england-project

Regards Joan,

England Project Leaders

Hello Joan,

Apologies for not respondiing sooner. I absolutely do not wish to leave the England project. I hope you can see how active I am in my own small way. I deliberately delayed replying as I'm about to have a hip operation (next week) and also because I'd like to be more interactive with other England team members once I recover. However, I'm unsure as to what the nature of that interaction might be. Outside WikiTree, I'm doing a fun but rather taxing research project on the Laxtons of Gretton with an amateur colleague like myself who lives in France and also with an expert genealogist from Northants Archives. It is too early to know if this could become a single-name/place study. The work we are doing currently involves extracting information from several 16th-century documents so I'm on a steep learning curve at the moment. I have put aside for now but am also working on another research project with a relative of my husband's who lives in Australia. Once that resumes, it may also turn out to be quite challenging and demanding of my time. I would welcome your advice as to what my next steps might be in relation to WikiTree as I do feel rather like an outsider at present.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for getting back to me. It sound like you current projects are very interesting and as if you will be able to put a lot of your research onto WikiTree. I hope you are enjoying it. Your work on the Laxtons of Gretton could become a one name or a one place study as you suggest, or you might be able to add them as a topic under the England project. I would wait and see how it develops and decide later which way you want to go with it. I notice that you are already on Discord. Its a great place to get to know other project members. Use the general chat channel to tell people what you are doing. I am sure you will get lots of suggestions and help from other project members with similar interests. I hope your surgery goes well, and that you make a quick recovery. Once you are back on WikiTree, just send a message to myself or any of the England Leaders if you need any help or advice. Regards Joan

I will try and use Discord more - at present I tend only to use it for queries about challenges. I like the idea of adding the Laxtons of Gretton as a topic under the England project. I'll give that more thought. I meant to say that the other research I'm doing is also mostly an England 'project', on the Yorkshire (Leeds) ancestors of a family who emigrated to Australia and became quite significant figures there. I'll get in touch again if I need any further help or advice - I'm hoping to do lots of family history while recovering!

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profile William Alleyn (abt.1570-).

Please provide at least a birth or death location estimate rather than leaving both locations blank. This helps disambiguate people since we have a global tree, locations help distinguish one profile of the same name from another. Even an estimate such as a continent, e.g., Europe or North America, is better than blank. Please read more here. Please explain the rationale for your estimate in a = = Research Notes = = section.

In the case of William, England appears to be a reasonable estimate for birth location.

Thank you for this William. As you may have noticed, I'm working on several profiles related to Edward Alleyn in parallel at the moment as part of Orphan Trail 2. None of Edward's relatives apart from one of his wives had a WikiTree ID or profile. The birth location for Edward and his siblings is still a matter of debate. But...I didn't know the trick of putting England as the location until better information came to light. I'll always do that from now on!

Hello Mike,

Sincere apologies for the radio silence. I very much want to remain involved with the England project. I knew I wouldn't be able to do anything for 2-3 months after Christmas but hoped to be back by April at the latest. I'm involved in some environmental projects that have been taking up more time than anticipated. But... I've also been beavering away checking and extending key branches of my own tree in its original location (and on Ancestry) so I am now almost ready to transfer my energies to WikiTree. I know I need to verify everything very carefully for WikiTree so I hope my behind the scenes activity will pay off. I can't promise to be active before the beginning of August but should be back in harness then. I will do a few simple things in July just so you know I really do mean to return.

Best wishes,

Anne

Hi Anne,

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's six-monthly check-in with our project members. I have not heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we do not hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Hello Joan,

This is a good moment to update you. Until about a week ago, I'd been a rather silent member of the England Project. I'm now part way through Orphan Trail 1 under the excellent guidance of Hilary Gadsby. I had become aware that I was not formatting my sources properly. I have rather a lot to go back and amend once I've completed the trail. I've been transferring my ancestors from my private tree to WikiTree one person at a time and had moved over around 600. I've been checking everything as I go and plugging gaps which is why it has been taking so long! I'm not going to allow myself to be daunted by the task in hand - it will take as long as is necessary to do it properly.

I joined Google Groups and Discord a week ago and was warmly welcomed by the regulars who use the latter. Much of the discussion is over my head at the moment.

Once I've finished Orphan Trail 1, I'm guessing I'll have some decisions to make as to whether I go straight to OT2 or consolidate my newly-acquired skills first. It may be some time before I become useful to anyone in the England Project but there's no point volunteering to help without the necessary skills is there? My interests until now have been mainly in direct line ancestors and trying to identify all the wives going back in time. Having been reading up about DNA, I realise I should pay more attention to cousins from now on. The other aspect I love is finding the individuals you can bring back to life and put together a tiny piece of social history based on their life. They are few and far between in my side of the tree but more plentiful in my husband's.

Hi Elizabeth,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around.

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally? Looking forward to hearing from you,

Joan, Amy & Lizzie.

I saw you worry about the profiles in your tree. I strongly encourage you to take the time for the Orphan Trail. Your mentor will guide you with formating of your profiles and sources. The plus is telling the stories of a few folks that don't have anyone to tell them. The experience will be well worth your time.

Sincerely Elaine Walling-681

Hello David,

Many thanks for contacting me. I almost certainly need some help from you and probably others. I have built my family tree in other genealogy software and am in the very slow process of moving one by one verified direct line ancestors of my husband and myself to Wiki tree. It is slow progress but teaching me a lot. In the last few days, I managed to push my husband's direct line back before 1700 and, as you will see, I added one husband and wife with birth dates just before 1700. Neither were in Wiki Tree. I'm not sure what my next steps should be as I do want to add more early ancestors. Yes - they will be mainly English but I can't work out what I must do and what I can or should do if I wish to collaborate on shared England projects. Many of my husband's ancestors were English Quakers so that is an obvious project to get involved with. As I've been adding those born post 1700, none seem to be in Wiki Tree. What should my next step be?

Anne

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the England Project would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).
