Name

James was born on 27 December 1732 in Midway, Caroline County, Virginia,[1][2]the sixth of seven known children and the youngest of three sons of James Taylor and Alice Thornton.
Probably in the late 1750s at an unknown place James married Ann Hubbard and they had five known children, four sons and one daughter:
  1. Hubbard Taylor
  2. James Taylor
  3. Reuben Taylor
  4. Mary Taylor
  5. Josiah Taylor
On 12 March[3] or May 12 1814, when he was eighty-one James died of unknown causes in Midway.[4][5]
James /Taylor/ IV[6][7][8]

From his son, James

According to his son, James Taylor had one brother and one sister:

"James, my father, was born in Caroline County, Virginia the 27th of December 1732 and died there the 12th of March 1814 in his 82nd year [at age 81]. I was born the 19th of April 1769, at the same place. My father had one brother and one sister. His brother Colonel Francis died about my birth [There is a discrepancy about the year of Francis Taylor's death. General Taylor's statement here puts Francis' death about 1769, but Hayden's research shows he was alive through 1783.]. His sister married Anthony Winston and died young leaving one daughter who married Dr. Cabell of Lynchburg, Virginia who left a large family [Alice Thornton Taylor and Anthony Winston had 5 children (one sons and 4 daughters)].[9]
More on James IV from his son General James Taylor's recount of his family history:[10]
"James Taylor [1732-1814] and George Muse were with George Washington at Braddock's defeat. General Washington spent a week with Colonel Muse at his residence in Caroline, a neighbor to my father. My father went with them. General Washington introduced him to Muse and he spent a week at his house studying military tactics. It is remarkable that I should know the officer well with whom our beloved Washington studied the rudiments of his military education.
"My father [James Taylor, born 1732] was High Sheriff of Caroline in 1788. I was one of his deputies and started to return the first member from our district at the organization of the Federal Court. John Page of Rosehill of King William County was our first member. My father was born the same year as George Washington, served with him six months tour after Braddock's defeat and helped to fortify the frontier west of Winchester from the Potomac towards Staunton. My father, with Judge Pendleton, represented Caroline in the Convention and both warmly advocated its adoption. He served about forty years in the Councils of his State, and did not lose an election during the whole time. He visited the District of Kentucky in the fall of 1783 to look after his land, did think of making it his residence but my mother dying a few years afterwards, he married a second and third wife and gave up his intentions to move.
"The oldest Justice of the Peace [of the county] received the office of Sheriff in rotation. In December 1787 my father [James Taylor 1732] became Sheriff a second time. I was in bad health from imprudence at school in overheating myself running course races, playing fox and hounds, running to my father's mill pond a mile from the schoolhouse, bathing in the pond, running back with a wet shirt and sitting on a damp dirt floor of the schoolhouse, fixed a disease on my lungs and affected my eyes, that my physician advised I should be taken from school, ride much on horseback, attend the medical springs in summer, as the most likely mode of restoring my health.
"My father advised me to qualify myself as one of his deputies. I did so in December 1781. In 1788, I attended at the election of members of the Virginia Convention to pass on the adoption of the Federal Constitution. The Hon. Edmund Pendleton and my father were elected without opposition and Judge Pendleton was President of that distinguished body. Both of the members warmly advocated its adoption and voted for it. It was ratified by a majority of only nine votes in that body. The celebrated Patrick Henry, Colonel Grayson, Cuthbert Battaile, and many other eloquent men being opposed to its adoption.
"I must name an incident which happened on the Courthouse Green between the late Colonel John Taylor of Caroline [and my father]. He was violently opposed to the adoption of the Constitution, came up to my father and remarked that that instrument abounded in defects and ought in his opinion not to be adopted. My father remarked that he had been waited upon by many of the influential men of the County and unsolicited called on to become a candidate with Judge Pendleton, and he consented and could not withdraw, but told Colonel Taylor if he thought proper to offer his services and assured him it should not be considered by him a breach of their friendship. About this time Colonel Pendleton stepped up and remarked No, Colonel Taylor, you must not decline, my nephew John thinks he knows better than we do and will support nothing which does not accord with his opinion of perfection. We know the old Confederation is like a rope of sand, nothing compulsory in it. My father remarked, there was some features in the instrument he thought required amendment, that a mode was provided in the instrument for that purpose and whenever its defects were experienced by Congress, he had no doubt amendments would be affected. But reserved his remarks to offer if he thought proper and it would give no offense. Colonel Taylor remarked, no sir, for very good reasons, I will not be a candidate, I know I could not if I would, and I would not if I could succeed against you."
