Note added Dec. 2016: It would be highly useful if a Y-Haplogroup test result could be obtained from another documented descendant of Josiah Taylor. Hopefully one will come forth.
Josiah Taylor was an early warrior in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico during the period 1810 to 1830. Josiah died in 1830 just as DeWitt Colony was being formed. and his wife, Hephzibeth Luker Taylor was awarded his portion of land in the new colony. Tons of information on his participation is readily available on-line.
'The connection of Josiah Taylor's parents shown here is circumstantial and based on statements by Josiah Taylor's son Creed Taylor:' Their family records were lost in the 1836 "run away scrape" (see source below) when the DeWitt Colony (Texas) inhabitants fled in panic before the Mexican onslaught preceding the battle of the Alamo.
At the time, Creed was 16 years old. When he grew up he served in the Mexican-American war under general Zachary Taylor. Creed said that he met the general while serving in Texas... they discussed their Taylor linage and determined that Creed's grandfather was Zachary Taylor's near relative, Col. James Taylor from Caroline County VA...hence this connection.
Unfortunately I have found no direct reference to Josiah Taylor in any of that family's linage source material. Much progress has been made in the past decade in sorting out this complex Taylor family linage, and research continues for more direct source confirmation. Garrett-4589 14:32, 6 April 2016 (EDT)
Josiah Taylor and many relatives are buried in Taylor-Bennett Cemetery, located on Taylor Road just east of Cuero, in DeWitt Co, TX.
Thirty-five years after Josiah's death virtually all of his first, second , third and many fourth generation descendants were involved, impacted or suffered the consequences of what is known as the Sutton-Taylor feud of the 1870's. The whole bloody, brutal affair is well-presented in the book The Sutton-Taylor feud, the deadliest blood feud in Texas. Author: Chuck Parsons.... and the book includes excellent bio material for many but not all of this Taylor family of that era. I plan to incorporate at least some of these Taylors in WikiTree as time permits... My own elusive Taylor ancestors are part of the equation. Research continues, searching for more conclusive documentation. rtg
