August was born in 1881. He was second son of Eduard August Stielow and Johanna Louise Spieker. His father left Germany in November 1883 to prepare a new home for the family in Canada. His mother joined her husband the following spring, bringing their three sons. August grew up in Arnprior, Ontario. He married Carrie Neill there and the couple had four children, all born in Arnprior: Isabella, Kenneth, Marjorie and Sadie. In 1911, August, a tailor, decided to relocate across the continent to Grays Harbor, Washington State. It is unclear what prompted such a distant move but since he established a business quickly in his new location, the job could have been arranged before he left Canada. In 1912 the firm of Stielow & Welander were tailors in the Lumbermans Bank Building in the Grays Harbor City Directory.
August filed Naturalization papers June 19,1917. At the time, age 36, he was 5 ft. 7 inches tall, weighed 138 pounds, had light brown hair and brown eyes. August continued working as a tailor in a tailor shop. His younger brother Fred back in Arnprior was also a tailor. August died in 1956, the same year as his brother Carl who had come to Canada with him, both brothers too young to remember the ocean voyage. August John Stielow is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, Washington State.
