Eduard was born in 1852 in Pomerania, Germany, the son of Carl Christlieb Stielow and Henriette Friedrike Wilhelmine Zech. He married Hannah Spieker in Germany after his first wife died. Eduard emigrated to Canada from Germany, sailing November 2, 1883, arriving in Quebec and traveling by land to McNab Township, Renfrew South, Ontario, near Ottawa. His wife remained behind as she was giving birth to another child. She joined her husband in April 1884 with sons Albert 5, August 3 and baby Carl. The couple had three more children born in Canada. Eduard, anglicizing his name to Edward, worked for the firm McLachlin Brothers for 44 years. His wife died in 1928 and Edward lived with his daughter Minnie and her husband Charles Loock in Mansfield. Edward passed away in 1940 and was buried in the Arnprior Cemetery. His obituary stated Edward had twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
It is unlikely that Eduard August Stielow's father was Carl Stielow born 23 Dec 1828 West Prussia and died 30 March 1907 Sheboygan, Wisconsin, U.S.A. (U.S., Find A Grave, Index). The idea was generated by similarity of birth dates, plus marriage in 1850 to a woman named Fredericka, but another U.S., Find A Grave listing includes a maiden name of Kunde, which is not similar to Zech. We are also reminded that Eduard's mother's name by his birth record included three names of which the first was Henriette. In addition the marriage record of Eduard's parents shows his grandfather's name as Johann Stielow, while the Find A Grave listing has the Wisconsin Carl Stielow with a father named Michael Stylau.
Edward worked for the McLachlin Brothers of Arnprior, Renfrew, Ontario for 44 years. This lumber company founded by Daniel McLachlin supplied sawn lumber, originally white pine and red pine from the banks of the Madawska River, to the American markets. There were four mills with Mill 4 constructed in 1892. When Daniel retired he left the business to his sons John H. McLachlin, Claude McLachlin and Hugh F. McLachlin. Hugh's son Dan McLachlin ran the business by 1912. In the early 1920's the firm was in decline and ceased operation in 1929.
