Mary, daughter of Edward and Mary Stickney was born in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, on 4 June 1812 (Rowntree Family Tree on Ancestry.com)
She was a schoolmistress at Ackney School.
Mary married William Rowntree in 1848. Their marriage was registered in the Scarborough district in the December quarter of 1847 [1]
In 1851 William, Mary, their sons William Strickney (2) and James Henry (1) were living in Newboro Street, Scarborough. William's occupation was a Draper employing assistants. Two assistants, Thomas Humphrey and Thomas Craven, and two apprentices Josiah Hardy and Charles Chipchase were part of the household [2].
In 1852-4, the family moved to the house built for them, Westwood Villa on the new road of Westwood, Scarborough (formerly Lovers Lane). It is named for Mary (Butler) Stickney, who loved Westwod, Beverley [3].
In 1861 William, Mary, William, James and Allan (8) were living in Victoria Road, Scarborough. Mary Stickney (47, born Scarles, Yorkshire, possibly Mary's sister-in-law?) was a visitor. There were three servants in the household Hannah Outhet, Ellen Wright and Margaret M A Kirby [4].
In 1871 William, Mary, William, James and Allan were living in Scarborough (possibly at Westwood Villa). visitors were Margaret E Bright (51, Wakefield, Yorkshire) and Mary Harriet Bright (21 Rochdale, Lancashire). The servants were Elizabeth Ray, Mary M Shaw, Betsy Shaw and Kate Horsfall William is now an 'upholsterer and draper' [5].
In 1881 the family was definitely at Westwood Villa, the household being William snr, Mary and James, with servants Eliz. Hopper and Reb. J. Newton[6].
In 1901 Mary was living with her son, James Henry in Sarborough (presumably at Westwood Villa). They had two visitors, Mary Spencer (42 born Sutton By Stow, Lincolnshire) and Alice Whitehead (26 born Naburn, Yorkshire). They had three female servants, Hanna White, Dorah A. Metcalf and Selina Appleby [7]
She died in 1901, at Westwood House. Her death was registered in the Scarborough District in the September quarter 1901 [8].
In her will, she left £5,336 5s 4d. Her property included plate, paintings, shares in the Valley Bridge, etc, but no houses or other property. She left more than £50,000 less than her husband. The principle legatees were James Henry and Allan, both described as 'drapers and house furnishers' [9].
