William Stickney Rowntree, son of William and Mary Rowntree, was born in Scarborough in 1848 [1]
In 1851 William, aged was living with his parents and his brother James Henry (1) were living in Newboro Street, Scarborough [2].
In 1861 William, his parents, and brothers James and Allan (8) were living in Victoria Road, Scarborough [3].
In 1871 William, his parents and brothers were living in Scarborough (possibly at Westwood Villa) [4].
William married his 1st cousin once removed, Anna Mary (Doncaster) Rowntree (1849-1938) of Broonihall Road (mistranscription - should be Broomhall Road, see Anna Mary's 1861 census return) Sheffield at the Sheffield Quaker meeting house on 20 July 1876 [5]. Their marriage was registered in the Ecclesall Bierlow Registration district (on the borders of Derbyshire and West Yorkshire abutting Sheffield [6]) in the September quarter of 1876 [7].
William established Scarborough Friends Adult School with his 1st cousin once removed , initially in an upper room above a fish-box store at Courting Steps, off Eastborough. Initially, Joseph was the sole teacher. In 1872 building a new building for the school in the garden of the old Friends Meeting House ("Spring Gardens")[8] [9].
In 1881 William and Anna, and their sons Ernest William (3) and Howard Doncaster (1) were living In Newborough, Scarborough. Also in the household were Gertrude Sophia Rowntree, a visitor aged 18, born in York, and female servants. Daniel Lloyd Evans, aged 27, born New Hall Brecon, Wales may have been a visitor or a servant. William is a " Master Draper Employing 18 Male Asst Clerks & Porters 31 Female Asst And Workgir" [10].
In 1891 William and Anna were living in Granville Road, Scarborough with their sons, and daughter Olive H. (aged 3, born Yorkshire) and three female servants. William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [11].
In 1901 William, Anna and Howard, together with their daughter Marion (19) and one female servant at Endcliffe, Granville Road, Scarborough . William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [12].
In 1911 William, Anna and Olive Hope (and two female servants) are still living in Granville Road, Scarborough. The house has 12 rooms. William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [13].
"William Stickney Rowntree (1848 – 1939) lived in Scarborough throughout most of his adult life. He was a notable citizen of the town, establishing a successful drapery business and living to become the oldest magistrate the town has ever had. Alongside his cousin Joshua Rowntree, he helped establish an Adult School in Scarborough." according to the Rowntree Family website [14].
William was living at Endcliffe, Granville Road, Scarborough in 1921, when he wrote to Lloyd George about Ireland and Germany, and deploring the prime minister's actions when he supported the Tories [15]
In 1939, William ("Director of Store, retired") and Olive, were registered at 2 Granville Road, Scarborough together with Helen G Crosland (born 15 March 1878, possibly a friend or relation, living on own means), Martha Metcalf (born 11 Nov 1877, companion), Maggie A Burch (nurse) and Mereen Gebson (Cook) and one child, probably a child of one of the other residents [16]
William's death was registered in the Scarborough District in the December quarter of 1939 [17]. William's will mentioned Howard Doncaster Rowntree, Olive Hope Rowntree, and Kenneth Edward Towler Wilkinson [18].
Need to revisit the 1939 register once William's siblings and their descendents have been added.
Anna Marie died in 1939, and left a will
The house in Granville Road is possibly "Cherry Trees".
