Westwood, Scarborough

Biography

Allan's birth was registered in the March quarter of 1853 in the Scarborough District of Yorkshire [1]. Censuses put his birthplace as Wintringham, Yorkshire. Wintringham lies just south of the Scarborough-Malton Road, closer to Malton than to Scarborough. At his birth, Henry Isaac Rowntree of the York branch of the family wrote to him "Accept the united love of my wife and myself and believe me, dear Claude to be now and ever (unless thou turned Tory), Thy affectionate cousin Henry Isaac Rowntree [2] (they were both great-grandsons of William Rowntree.

In 1861 Allan, aged 8, his Parents William and Mary and brothers William and James and Maria Stickney were living in an unnamed house in Victoria Road, Scarborough. The previously enumerated dwelling was Westborough Lodge, the next was unoccupied, and the next was Beulah Villa [3].

In 1871 all the family were living in at Broom Lodge, Westover Road, Scarborough (the otherside of the railway bridge from Westwood) [4].

Allan married Sarah Watkins Robinson in York on 26 February 1881 [5]. However, the Civil Registration took place in the Scarborough District [6].

In 1900 Allan's home (presumably Broom House, Westover, Scarborough) was attacked in an anti-Boer riot which had followed a meeting seeking peice in the Cafe annexed to the Department Store. The rioters "broke their windows and did much other damage" [7].

In 1891 Allan, Sarah, and their sons Allan C (9, born Scarborough) and Sydney (6, born Yorkshire) were living at Broom Lodge, Scarborough. Allan's occupation was as a draper. They had one servant, Mary Hornsey [8].

In 1901 the family were living in Scarborough (address not given), with their sons Allan C, and William (aged 7, born Scarborough). Allan is now a Drapers Shopkeeper. They had two servants, Violet and Mary Miller of Danby, Yorkshire [9].

In 1911 Allan and Sarah are living in Scarborough (address not given). They have a visitor, Eleanor Holland, of County Dublin, Ireland. Allan is a Draper. Two servants, Mary Miller and Edith Mary Shannon live with them [10].

In June quarter of 1915, Allan married Mary Miller (his former servant born c. 1778 in Danby, Yorkshire) [11] - possibly where his previous wife had died. From the 1939 register, we know Mary was born on 13 December 1877.

During World War One, Allan served with his son Allan Claude, on the "War Victims" Relief Committee of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Fred Rowntree of Scarborough may be the Fred Rowntree also have served on the committee (may also be another Fred Rowntree, as there were several alive in the UK at that time). Fred. Joan Hurndall, Kathleen Rowntree(?) are all listed as 'returned worker or visitor' since the previous report was issued (date unknown) [12].

On 19 June 1921 the census recorded Allan (68) was the employer (owner) of W. Rowntree and Sons stores 33-39 Westborough, Scarborough. He was living at 89 Scalby Road, Scarborough with his wife Mary Miller (43), visitors Elizabeth Kerr (60, born Weston, Cheshire) and Edith Larcheser (51, born Liverpool, Lancashire) a Secondary School teacher working for Scarborough Local Education Authority. Also in the household was servant Ellen Williams (40, born Liverpool, Lancashire).

In 1939 Allan and Mary (born 12 December 1877), together with Nellie Kerr, "on independent means" and a female servant were living at Westwood. Allan is described as a retired company director [13].

Allan's death was registered in the Scarborough District in the June quarter of 1940 [14]. From probate, he was living at Westwood, and died on 25 May, 1940. His beneficiaries were "Mary Miller Rowntree widow Allan Claude Rowntree" [15].

Research Notes

There is no trace of Allan or Sarah in the 1881 Census (searched freeCEN, Family search and Ancestry 22/6/2020).

Broom Lodge had previously been the home (in the 1860s) of Mr William Willott (1827-1870) who had funded the failed musical enterprise "Light and Shade" after having made his money in the Huddersfield cloth trade and as owner of the Sheffield Times (information from "Victorian Vocalists" by Kurt Ganzl, (2017).
