Biography

Anna Mary the daughter of Daniel Daniel and Maria Mallinson-115 Doncaster, was born in 1849 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

In 1851 Anna was living with her niece, Maria Hotham (aged 9), in the Ecclesall Bierlow registration district (i.e. the southerly part of Sheffield, or over the border in Derbyshire). No parents were present, but there were three female servants [1].

In 1861 Anna was living with her parents, her sisters Helen (27, Lucy M (17), a dn Phoebe (14), and her brothers Daniel (26), David K (24), Charles (19), Samuel (8) and Arthur (5). The family was living at Broomhall Road, Broomhall, which is in the Ecclesall Bierlow registration district [2]

In 1871 Anna and Phoebe were visitors in the Neild household in Dean, Spelsbury, Oxfordshire England. Ralph Neild, head of the household was a widowed farmer. The Neil's daughter was a similar age, and the family originated from Cheshire [3].

Anna married William Strickney Rowntree on 20 Jul 1876 at the Sheffield Quaker meeting house on 20 July 1876 [4]. At the time of her marriage, Anna was living in Broomhall Road, Sheffield. Their marriage was registered in the Ecclesall Bierlow Registration district (on the borders of Derbyshire and West Yorkshire abutting Sheffield [5]) in the September quarter of 1876 [6]. Anna was the great-grandaughter of William Rowntree and Hannah Hebron and William was the great-grandson of the couple.

In 1881 William and Anna, and their sons Ernest William (3) and Howard Doncaster (1) were living In Newborough, Scarborough. Also in the household were Gertrude Sophia Rowntree, a visitor aged 18, born in York, and female servants. Daniel Lloyd Evans, aged 27, born New Hall Brecon, Wales may have been a visitor or a servant. William is a " Master Draper Employing 18 Male Asst Clerks & Porters 31 Female Asst And Workgir" [7].

In 1891 William and Anna were living in Granville Road, Scarborough with their sons, and daughter Olive H. (aged 3, born Yorkshire) and three female servants. William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [8].

In 1901 William, Anna and Howard, together with their daughter Marion (19) and one female servant at Endcliffe, Granville Road, Scarborough . William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [9].

In 1911 William, Anna and Olive Hope (and two women, presumably female servants) are still living in St Martin's parish, Scarborough. William is a "Draper Upholsterer" [10].

Anna died on 2nd November 1938, in Scarborough. The beneficiaries of her will were her husband, Howard Doncaster Rowntree and Kenneth Edward Towler Wilkinson [11].
