Wales Project | Welsh Dragons

Welcome to the team page for the Welsh Dragons!

This is the page for the Welsh Dragons the Wales Project WikiTree team. The Welsh Dragons are a non-competitive team that participate in all of WikiTree's thons, focusing mainly on Welsh profiles. We were newly formed in March 2022 and we all love Wales (and dragons!).

Team Captains: Jutta (Armstrong) Beer| Hilary Gadsby

This time it's a Source-a-thon!

Contents

2023 Source-a-Thon

The Welsh Dragons are participating in the 2023 Source-a-Thon. You can read all about it [[1]].

It starts on Friday morning at 8:00am EDT (1:00pm BST) September 29, 2023 and runs until Monday at 8:00am EDT October 2, 2023.

Signing Up

To sign up for the Welsh Dragons team please answer the 2023 Source-a-Thon G2G post and put a comment on here, Discord or Google Groups to let us know what area you'll be working on. Whilst we want to concentrate on Wales, you can work in any area and it all counts and improves the quality of the tree. The important thing for this team is quality of sourcing rather than quantity of profiles so we are unlikely to win.

Once you are signed up you can add a sticker to your profile if you like that sort of thing - just copy and paste this {{Source-a-Thon|team=The Welsh Dragons|year=2023}} into your profile.

Chat

Thons are great for getting to know people and feeling more like you are working in a community. We have a Welsh Dragons Discord channel on the Wales Project server. If you're not signed up for Discord and you want to be please let me know. We are also on Google Groups. You can also post on this page or the Team G2G chat.

Goals

We are a small team and so unlikely to win the Thon. But by adding more profiles the Tree wins and that is why our goal is quality – not quantity. Every profile added increases the chance of connections.

The Challenge:
Adding profiles is easy enough but please make sure you add at least one source and preferably more.

The Welsh Dragons will mainly concentrate on profiles in Wales.

Source-a-Thon "How to"

Participating means removing profiles from the Unsourced Profiles category. They cannot be new profiles that you create.

Select an Open (white) profile from anywhere in the category or one of its subcategories and search for sources to back up the facts of the person's life.

Valid sources include census records, BMD records/index references, military documents, land documents, wills, etc. A source cannot be another user-generated family tree, such as Geni or an Ancestry Member Tree.

If you find a valid source:

  • Edit the profile to add the source, according to our Sources guide.
  • Remove the {{Unsourced}} Research Note Box tag or category as appropriate.
  • Save the profile and click the Challenge Tracker button. This is very important as this is the only way to make your contributions count in the challenge.
  • On the Challenge Tracker, select the Source-a-Thon checkbox.
  • If you don't find a source after searching, please add a Research Notes section to the profile. Say where you have looked and sign your comment with four tildes ~~~~ so it is dated. For example: "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry." (Armstrong-17381 13:36, 2 September 2022 (UTC)). This way the next researcher knows where to start.

I have quite a few unconnected profiles in Glamorgan, Carmarthenshire, Montgomeryshire, Breconshire, Cardiganshire, Monmouthshire and Anglesey so will initially try working out from them in an effort to get them connected. Hopefully I won’t be creating too many new loose ends😂
