Suggestions Guidelines

Whether you are just joining the Data Doctors team or needing a refresher, this is a wonderful overview of
Data Doctors Suggestions Guidelines.

There is a Difficulty Rating for each suggestion:

Easy: Very basic format issues caused by typos, punctuation, omissions, name or date errors. (Examples: Brackets, Typos in any field, Headings)
Intermediate: Requires knowledge of WikiTree functions and proper formatting. (Examples: Inline citations, Sourcing, Template formatting)
Advanced: Requires multiple steps, research, and combines more than one intermediate function to resolve. (Examples: Merging, Clean up Profile after merges, duplicate sources, gedcom cleanup)

There are suggestions to work on at every experience level. On any level, please work on profiles only in the location[s] and timeframe[s] you are comfortable with and qualified for (i.e. you are badged for Pre-1700 or Pre-1500 Certifications; live in and/or research specific location[s]).

Beginners: Work on Easy suggestions
Intermediate: Work on Intermediate and Easy suggestions,
Advanced & Expert: Work on all levels and concentrate on the more complex suggestions

Check out the Wales & County Stats Page to view our Project's data status.
NOTE: Wales stats already have Country=Australia removed, which considerably mitigates "New South Wales" crossover into Wales stats. That said, it's not possible to restrict "new" as this would impact Wales name with "new" included too. For this reason, if the location has "New South Wales" without "Australia" included, it will be picked up within our stats.

Data Doctors Help

Here are a few common scenarios, which the main Data Doctors Project provides guidance on, should you find yourself in need of assistance.

  1. Where do Data Doctors go for help when a suggestion is difficult?
  2. What can Data Doctors do if they encounter access issues on profiles?
  3. Are there Data Doctor restrictions for working on pre-1700 profiles?
  4. Are there Data Doctor restrictions for working on pre-1500 profiles?
  5. Should Data Docs work on Project Protected Profiles (PPP)?
  6. Should Data Docs work on Training Trail/Voyage profiles?

Wales DD Team,

I've added a small table to list DD suggestions focus for each team member. This isn't to dedicate to any one type of suggestion; rather, simply so we know what our preference or focus is generally on. If we see considerable overlap in any suggestion series, we could divide or adopt specific suggestions so we're not tripping over each other's work too. Just a minor team page enahncement to assist our understanding of each other's efforts as our little Wales DD team grows. As your time permits, please edit the able to reflect your DD suggestions focus. Thank you.

Wales DD Team,

The Wales Data Doctors page has now been given an upgrade to align better with main Data Doc Project, accommodate some of their requested items, clean up some broken links, and provide more direct links to usefule DD tools, reports, guidance, etc.

If anyone has any suggestions for further enhancments, please just let the team know and we can review/adjust accordingly.

Take care. Todd

Please welcome Todd as Team Leader. Tim's employment requirements leave little time for this role. Thanks Tim for your work.

Ian, all of us working on profiles face what you described. We solve what we can and we contact the PM. That is consistent with the team goals. Find A Grave is always a challenge due to the vagaries of the FAG system.

Thanks for your work.

Tim, after updating the Status Charts yesterday I came to the same conclusion. There is no way those numbers can include or reflect the work of the team. As you point out, new suggestions are being created that causes the numbers to increase in many categories. Another example is including suggestions for abbreviations of location names, such as USA. That will cause another increase in the number of suggestions.

Tim and Ian, I will remove the charts. It was all I could come up with when creating the team pages.

There is no need for a specific measurement of progress. The team goals will be met by relying on the team members to do as much as they are able to do.

Hi Stuart,

I see that there has been a large jump in the number suggestions this week and that to a large extent this seems to be as a result of the new "profile completeness" section. Are we as, data doctors, meant to be resolving these suggestions?

My understanding was that these completeness checks were really for the use of individual members and specific projects and as such they would be unhappy if others start interfering. If this understanding is correct, would it be a good idea to remove these suggestions from the weekly report and so reduce the risk of over-enthusiastic data doctors meddling in these areas?

I have been busy for the past few weeks cleaning up errors, mainly in the Find A Grave section. I had a fair bit of success with "572 FindAGrave - Linked grave not matching profile"; however, some of the profiles do not allow editing if you are not on the trusted list. I have left messages for the Profile Managers on these and hopefully, they will correct them.

I am finding some challenges with errors in the profiles prior to 1700. Many of these are well researched and the differences between FInd A Grave and WikiTree are pretty subjective. Not sure how we correct these. If there is no easy resolution, we may need to mark them as False Suggestions so they don't keep showing up on the suggestion list. In any case, I have moved on the the 1700's and 1800's as those errors are not so challenging.

As Tim pointed out, I have also ran across a few profiles from New South Wales, or Wales County in Michigan, or other places with Wales in the name, but not necessarily from Wales.

Hi Ian, if you're searching on WikiTree+ you can use "not new not south" in the search field and it will exclude New South Wales profiles. Susie :-)

Hi Susie,

Thanks very much for the tip on Wikitree+. I tried the search string "Wales not new not south" and it did indeed exclude the suggestions for New South Wales, the problem, however (at least when looking at suggestion 310), was that it seemed to include people with Wales in their names but who did not have Wales in any of their locations. Do you know of a trick to stop the search looking at the names?

Hi Tim, I'm not sure to be honest. You could ask in the Data Doctors Google group or on G2G? Susie :-)

What would be the advantage of using WikiTree+ as opposed to the Data Doctors Suggestions for Wales?
posted by Stuart Awbrey
The Wikitree+ offers some flexibility in that you can run the reports for a particular location or name and also for a specific suggestion. Another advantage is that the reports are up to date so if I clear a suggestion on Monday morning it will not appear on the report if I run it again on Monday afternoon.

One disadvantage of Wikitree+ is that the reports do are not always comprehensive - or that is how it seems to me at least. Yesterday when I was looking at the text suggested by Susie, I ran the report for the suggestion 864 based on the text of just Wales and the report identified five suggestions on one of the profiles who had a location in New South Wales ; when I looked at the profile itself there were seven 864 suggestions on this one profile; when I ran a Wikitree+ report on the last name all seven suggestions appeared (so checking that none of the suggestions had been cleared). It may be that there is some kind of time-out or cut-off on Wikitree+ which means that it does it always give the full list for the report selection.

Thanks for your work Tim. I have submitted a request to see if the report can be modified.

Addendum: Aleš has responded with several problems that seem to preclude the ability to New South Wales from the Wales list.

Hello Data Doctors Team.

Let me know if any of you need help with working towards the team’s goals.

Does anyone have suggestions for improvement to the goals and procedures on the team page?

If you have had the opportunity to work on the team goals, please share your experiences in this Comments section.

Hello Stuart,

I do not have any specific suggestions on the goals and procedures but I am wondering if the suggestions report can be changed slightly so that it is limited to only the country of Wales. I realise that the programming for this could be tricky but if we could at least remove the suggestions for New South Wales (Colony of / Australia) that would be a big help in keeping me focused. (See the first page of the 31 May report for DBE 864 "Almost empty <ref/> tags" as an example)

In terms of work being done - this last week I had a look at DBE 409 "Marriage to duplicate person" and proposed a number of merges on the obvious ones and so far five out of the seven have been approved and actioned by the PMs which, although not a huge number of cleared suggestions, is more progress than I expected.

Do let me know if there is an area that you would like me to concentrate on.

Thanks for the info. I am not aware of any priority among the suggestions.
