Biography

William Heaves Smithers was probably born in 1781. He was baptized on 13th May that year in Preston, Sussex, England. [1]

NOTE: His middle name is recorded as Eves in some documents, which is incorrect. He wrote his name William Heaves Smithers and Heaves, sometimes written Heeves, was his great grandmother's maiden name.
In his children’s baptisms he is listed as a schoolmaster in 1813,1816,
then grocer 1816 and tallow chandler in 1823.
Emigrated to Perth, Australia, in 1829; had 10 children with his wife Susannah Blunden, but returned to England, after his wife died in 1839, where he died in 1852.

In January 1836 the Smithers family took over the halfway house between Guildford and York. By July 1837 they were planning to leave this property and he was asking for all debts to be paid to him or Mr Okely. He also advertised a house to Let and was in possession of Albion Town Farm. It appears he may have been living at Merrow Farm.

In March 1836 a W. H. Smithers was operating a licenced Hotel in Fremantle.

In October 1836 he advertised To Let PEMBROKE FARM consisting of two Thousand Acres, and situated on Melville water about three miles from Fremantle late in the possession of A. Waylen Esq. with a right of cutting Timber thereon of which there is a great quantity of the first quality. Persons cutting Timber or Poles thereon, or committing any Trespass will be prosecuted. For Particulars apply to Mr W. H. SMITHERS ALSO WANTED a Man who understands Cattle, and can make himself generally useful apply as above or to Mr Okely Fremantle.

In March 1839 he advertised For Sale to be sold by private contract, a farm, with cottage and stock-yard, on the Swan, consisting of one hundred and forty acres. About seventeen acres are nearly enclosed with a five-rail fence. For particulars, enquire of Messrs. Habgood, Perth ; or of the proprietor, W. H. Smithers, Fremantle.

In June 1839 he advertisd that he was about to leave the Colony.

He left the colony on his own on 15/1/1843 on the Houghton-le-skerne sailing for London via Cape of Good Hope.

William Heaves Smithers who came to Australia in 1829 and left to go to South Africa in the mid 1800s, had descendants one of whom was George.

Three sons settled in Cape Town ie James in 1829 and Bartholomew and George both shortly after 1830 -and a sister Elizabeth some time before 1832 - I have most of the entire family picture from about 1700 until the 1880's when family contact seems to have evaporated.

SMITHERS William Heaves of 11 St. Mary's Road Islington Middlesex died 17 August 1852. [2]Probate London 7 October to George Smithers print seller's manager and Walter Charles Smithers accountant.

Susan: Hello

Back in March 30, 2018 you posted a comment regarding a sister (Elizabeth) of William Heaves Smithers as having married one George Francis Parker, and that they (Elizabeth and George) had 13 children. The reference to the Parker marriage to Elizabeth (as William's sister) should have shown Elizabeth as being (one of) William's daughters. (William's sister Elizabeth actually married into the Dring family - as did another of his sisters, viz. Ann, as shown above.) Phil (Grace-883)

Sister Elizabeth Smithers marrried George Francis Parker and they had 13 children. They bought Altydgedacht farm in Durbanville. Cape Town in 1851 and it remains in the Parker family today.
