Family (at least father William and mother Susan) emigrated to Perth in 1829; some time after mother died in Perth in 1839 father William returned to England where he died in 1852.

Henry Garland and Susan Smithers married in 1828 just before her parents emigrated to Perth (1829). They had 9 children and resided in Petworth, Sussex where he was a schoolmaster. All the children with the exception of Ernest Bartholomew Garland seem to have stayed in England. Ernest Bartholomew Garland emigrated to the Cape in 1893, took out a patent on tanning leather in 1897 and founded the firm of Mossop and Garlans in South Africa. No death record found. ^[15][16]
