Pierre Luma Simon, who later called himself Pierre Numa Simon, was born in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, on August 18, 1891, to Norbert Simon and Edmonia Judson.[1][2] He grew up in Acadia Parish in a large family. He had 13 siblings as well as various uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews living in the house at times.[3]
Around 1910 he married Marie Edolise Trahan in Acadia Parish.[4]
In 1910 the newlywed couple lived in Crowley.[7] Sometime after 1910 Pierre's preferred middle name became Numa, perhaps a somewhat more common name than Luma.
In 1917 his WWI draft registration card describes him as 5'8" tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. The blue eyes were at least in part from his Judson grandfather, believed to have been of Scandiavian descent.[8] He lived seven miles south of Crowley with his wife and four children. He was an independent tenant rice farmer. He signed the card "Pierre Numa Simon," and his date of birth was 18 August 1891. [9]By 1920 they had five children.[5] And by 1930, still in the same location, they had eight children.[6]
By 1940 all but the two youngest children were on their own, and Numa and Edolise lived out their years in Acadia, with married daughters Eumia Simon Duffy and Lillian Simon Breaux close by.[10]
In 1942 he was described on his WWII draft card as 5'6" and 220 lbs. His hair was black, his complexion ruddy, and his eyes blue. He was still self-employed, and his address was Route 1, Crowley. He named himself as the person who would always know his address, signed the card "Pierre Numa Simon," and his date of birth was 18 August 1891.
Pierre Luma "Numa" Simon died July 24, 1964[11] and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley.[12]
