Onize Antoine Simon was born January 25, 1895, in Acadia Parish, Louisiana, ^[1] to Norbert "Nawbaa" Simon and Edmonia Judson. He was christened March 31, 1895 in St. Joseph's Church in Iota.^[2] Onize grew up just outside of Crowley, on a small farm with a house full of children and relatives. He was counted on the census with them there in 1900,^[3] and again in 1910.^[4]

He married Lydie Frederick in late October, 1913. ^[5]

The World War I draft registration found him living outside of Crowley, Louisiana in 1917, the father of an infant daughter.^[6] In 1920 they were counted on the census outside of Crowley, Louisiana, with two daughters.^[7] Twenty years later, in 1940 they were counted in Crowley, with their two younger daughters and a son.^[8] By 1942 when he registered for the World War II draft, he gave Rayne, Louisiana as his home address.^[1]

Onize Antoine Simon died December 15, 1957 in Acadia, Louisiana, and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley. ^[9]

Research Notes

Birth month- The date "25th Dec 1895" reported in his obituary is obviously a typo, as he was baptized March 31 of that same year.^[2] His two draft cards show his birth date as January 25, 1895, which is what is reflected on this profile.

Name- appears as 'Onize' on tombstone, draft cards, and on 1940 US Census; as 'Antoine Oves' on marriage record, 'Antoine O' on marriage license index; as 'Anazie,' 'Oneza,' and as 'O Antewine Simons,' on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 US Censuses, respectively. Just as his father's name is spelled seven different ways on seven different records, so it was for Onize Antoine Simon. His signature seems the most appropriate choice-- however, the two examples available differ (in name order) as well. ^[6]
