Biography

Early Years

The early years of Catharine Margaretha Scheel are unclear or not well documented. Her gravestone has her date of birth as December 26, 1861. Per the Birth Certificate of daughter, Emma, her place of birth was Kiel. Names she was also known as are Schale, Shields, Katharine, and Kate[1]

The German Rootdigger website lists Catherine as the daughter of Jochim Scheel and Anna Magdelena Sophia Stender. She had a sister, Ida, and brother, Christian. When Catherine was 14, the family (except Christian who had emigrated two years prior) would leave Hamburg & Havre, Germany on the ship "Horatio". Jochim was 53, Anna 45 and Ida was 21. They would arrive in New York City on April 28, 1875.[2][3][4]

Where was the family between their arrival and the first well documented event in the United States, the marriage between Katherine Scheel and Fred Moeller, on July 23, 1881 in Douglas County, Nebraska? Her father was in Ft Calhoun, Washington County, Nebraska per the 1880 census record, listed as a widower.[5][6][7]

The 1880 United States Census shows a 19 year old Kate Sheel (transcribed as Shul) from Holstein as a servant for a private family in Omaha[8]
