Biography

Harry Prescott Mosley was born on January 27, 1851, at Tivoli Place, Broughton, Salford, Lancashire, England. His birth was registered at Salford on March 1 of that year. As with his sister E.J., no name is listed on the registration documents. He was a son of Thomas Mosley and Eliza Shea Mosley. Harry was baptized at the Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Denys, and St. George (Manchester Cathedral), on March 24, 1851.

Again like his sister E.J., Harry is listed in the UK census data for 1851 and 1861 as living with his parents and siblings at Bury New Road, Broughton, Lancashire (in 1851) and at 11 Manchester Road, Cheadle Bulkeley, Cheshire (in 1861).

There is no sign of Harry living in England at the time of any of the UK census data from 1871 to 1911. We assume that he was living on Gibraltar over the intervening 50+ years, working with his father and then his elder brother Alexander. In fact, census data from Gibraltar in 1871 show Harry living with his parents and a sister at 20 years of age.

On the other hand, it is clear that Harry did travel, at least occasionally between Gibraltar, London, and New York.

In 1921 we can find Harry Prescott Mosley living at St Bernard's, Oak End Way, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England. His servants have included him on the 1921 census form, even though he is not actually present at the time, and they have described him as a "Retired banker".

Then on March 20, 1923, he took what was probably a last trip -- to Algiers in North Africa.

There seem to be no data to suggest that Harry ever married or had children.

Harry passed away on August 13, 1924, at St. Bernards, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England; his death was registered at Eton in the July quarter of that year.
