Eliza Jane ("Nita" or "E.J.") Mosley was born on May 15 or 16, 1849, at 10 Hyde Park Square, Paddington. London, England. Her birth was registered at St. John Paddington in London on June 1, 1849, but no name was listed on the registration form. She was a daughter of Thomas Mosley and Eliza Shea Mosley.

In the UK census data for 1851 and 1861, this child is listed as living with her parents and siblings at Bury New Road, Broughton, Lancashire (in 1851) and at 11 Manchester Road, Cheadle Bulkeley, Cheshire (in 1861).
