Biography

Edmund George Loraine Mosley was born on September 3, 1882; his birth was registered at Chester, Cheshire, England, in the July quarter of that year. He was a son of Antonio Felix Mosley and Elizabeth Jane Over Mosley. He was baptized on August 7, 1887, at Hoole, Cheshire, England.

Note: The spelling of Edmund's third given name changes over time from Loraine (with one R when he was born and baptized to Lorraine (with two Rs) by the time he is married in 1910. We have no idea why this might have happened.

At the time of the UK census, Edmund is living with his parents and two siblings at 4 Oliver Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, and he is still living at this address at the time of the 1901 census, with his mother and two siblings (after his father had died). However, by 1901 Edmund was employed as a "Shipping clerk".

On September 14, 1910, Edmund was married to Annie Twiss at St. Mark's, West Gorton, Lancashire, and their marriage was registered at Chorlton in the July quarter of that year. They would have two children by 1915.

As of the UK census in 1911, Edmund and his wife are living at 33 Bankfield Avenue, Victoria Road, Rusholme, Manchester, and Edmund lists his occupation as a "Commercial electrical engineer". As indicated above, he is now spelling his name Lorraine with two Rs.

We are unable to identify Edmund in the census data for 1921, but Edmund is clearly listed in Kelly´s Directory of Manchester of Salford and Suburbs for 1929, living at 12 Berkeley Avenue and self-employed as an "Electrical engineer". Then, as of the 1939 Register of England and Wales (at the start of World War II), he is living at the same address, with his wife and one child, and still occupied as an "Electrical engineer".

Edmund died on March 6, 1957, at 12 Berkeley Avenue, Victoria Park, Manchester, Lancashire, and his death was registered at Manchester in the January quarter of that year.

According to a report in the Manchester Evening News on March 9, 1957, his funeral service was held at St. James's Church, Birch-in-Rusholme, Manchester, on Monday, March 11, 1957, followed by his cremation at Stockport Crematorium. It is perhaps notable that in that funeral notice his third name is spelled (incorrectly) as Lorain (with one R and no final E)!
