Biography

This William Mosley is said to have been 50 years of age at the time of his death, implying that he was born between July 12, 1792, and July 11, 1793. In the 1841 census data William indicates that he was born in Lancashire and he may have been born in Warrington (which is now in Cheshire but it was in Lancashire in the late 1700s). However, his place of birth is unproven.

There is strong evidence to suggest that William's parent were John Mosley or Moseley and his wife, Catherine Stodhartt Mosley or Moseley, but this remains to be proven with confirmatory evidence.

On April 21, 1813, William married Sarah Whittaker at the Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Denys and St. George, Manchester, Lancashire. William's surname is spelled "Mossley" but he signs his name as "Wm. Mosley"; his occupation at the date of this marriage is listed as "Fustian cutter" in the marriage record. They would have a total of 12 children between 1813 and 1835.

We also know that:

  • At the time of the baptism of his children Maria and George in 1815, William's place of residence is simply listed as "Manchester" in the baptismal record; his occupation is listed as "Fustian cutter"
  • At the time of the baptism of his daughters Mary Ann and Sarah Jane, William's place of residence is again listed as "Manchester" in the baptismal record; his occupation is listed as "Warehouseman"
  • At the time of the baptism of his daughters Emma, Frances, and Caroline, William gives his place of abode as Hulme and his occupation as "Warehouseman"
  • At the time of the baptism of his last child, Thomas Henry, in 1838, William lists his place of residence as Russell Street, Hulme, Manchester and his occupation as "Warehouseman"
  • In the UK census data for 1841, William lists his place of residence as Russell Street, Hulme, Manchester, and his occupation as "Warehouseman". (Supposedly he is also listed in Pigot's Directory for 1841 as a "Fustian manufacturer", but we have yet to confirm this attribution.)

William dies on July 12, 1843, at Hulme, Manchester, and his death is registered at Chorlton. His occupation is listed as "Fustian manufacturer" on his death certificate and his age is listed as 50 years.
