Biography

John Morgan was born about 1739. He is the son of Thomas Morgan and Lettice Evans. Transcription of Will of Thomas Morgan names 17 living children; the 5th named child was John Morgan.[1]
1776 Project
John Morgan served with 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

John Morgan enlisted during the Revolutionary War for the Term of Three years in the company commanded by Captain David Kilgore (commissioned Capt of the 8th PA in Aug 1776) in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Emas McCoy in the line of the State of Pennsylvania under General "Mad Anthony" Wayne on the continental Establishment. He continued to serve for three years, three months, and seventeen days. He was discharged from Colonel Daniel Brodhead’s Regiment at Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania. (Col Daniel Brodhead’s regiment arrived at Fort Pitt on Sep 10, 1778). His pension applicatation states that he was in the Battle of Banbrook [Bound Brook, Apr 13, 1777], Peola [Paoli, Sep 20, 1777], at the sign of the Black Horse [New York], Brandywine [Sep 11, 1777], and Germantown [Oct 4, 1777]. He was awarded a pension for his service as a Private and was inscribed on the Roll of East Tennessee at the rate of eight dollars per month commencing on 27 July 1818. On his pension application, dated 25 October 1820 and again on 24 April 1821, he identifies his wife, Letia Morgan, age 45; a son Stephen Morgan, age 14; and a son Zachariah Morgan, age 7.<Pension Record S.18.956, Act of 18 March 1818; Vol. 3, Page 345; (greenecountytngenealogicalsociety.org)./>

He was a Citizen of the United States, resident of Greene County, Tennessee, on the 18th day of March 1818.

Thomas Morgan, age 80-90, was listed on the 1830 census, Greene County, Tennessee, living with a female age 40-50 (no children). He was living near Lewis Morgan, age 40-50, Thos. Morgan, age 40-50, John Morgan Jr, age 30-40, and Wm Morgan, age 20-30.[2]

Research Notes

Stephen married Martha "Minty" and had 6 daughers and 1 son, Daniel A Morgan. Stephen and family live in the Limeston Springs area of Greene County, Tennessee. In 1880, he lived in Cocke County, Tennessee. Census records consistently stated he was born in South Carolina. His son Daniel died in Newport on 21 Oct 1936; death certificate states: "Parents unknown." (sources needed)

Zachariah Morgan married Elizabeth Stansberry on 10 October 1831 at Greene, Tennessee. He was living with his family in Cheneys Grove Township, McLean County, Illinois by 1850. They are buried in Riverside Cemetery. (sources needed)
