Biography

Mordacai was born about 1765; he was son of Thomas Morgan and his 2nd wife Ester Taylor. He is named as a son in his father's will (15th child named).

He married Elizabeth D (Nichols) Morgan (abt.1771-1840) in Bedford County, Virginia on 3 February 1791, daughter of Bazdel; Morgan Morgan (abt.1760-abt.1819), Surety; Married by John Ayers, Feb. 3, 1791.[1][2][3] They had the following children:

Mordecai and his bother, Morgan Morgan (abt.1760-abt.1819), received “my old plantation” in the will of their father.[4]

On 16 April 1825, Mordecai Morgan purchased 279-1/2 acres (lot nos. 1 and 2) in Bedford County, Virginia, from Morgan Morgan (abt.1760-abt.1819) and wife Elizabeth for $1. This land having been conveyed to Morgan Morgan on 22 June 1822 by George B Woodson being part of the land conveyed by Moses Woosher and Obedience Woosher to William Terry in 1808.[5]

He passed away before March 1828 when his estate (containing 1606-1/4 acres) was ordered to be divided between his widow and children as follows: "one equal third part having regard to quantity and quality of all the land & tenements...and one equal third part of of all the slaves and other personal property, utensils, money, lands, bonds, credits and chattels of every kind whatsoever and that they do divide the residual of the real estate, lands and tenements and also the personal estate, slaves, [clock?], utensils, money, bonds, credits and chattel of any kind whatsoever into nine equal parts and assign by lot one of these parts to each of the following parties to wit: To Elizabeth, Lucy, Rebecca, Alexander & Eliza Lazenby, children of John & Permelia Lazenby, one ninth part to William Davis & Lucy his wife, one ninth part, to Jesse Morgan, Thomas Morgan, Christopher Morgan, John Morgan, Rebecca Morgan, Catherine Morgan & Wesley Morgan severally one ninth part and that the administrator do deliver their respective portions of the personal estate, debts, credits, etc. to each of the adult distributes and the portion of John Lazenby’s children to him as their guardian upon receiving from each person to in [?] a portion is delivered an indemnifying bond with each security and such a sum as the said administrators may approve and the commissioners are required to report to this court then proceeding in this behalf whenever they are completed in order to a final decree."[6]

On 29 April 1828, Bedford County Court: Morgan, Mordaica, land div, “whereas Jesse Morgan, Thomas Morgan, and others are Plaintiffs agt. Elizabeth Morgan widow of Mordaica Morgan Dc’d & John Lazenby & others..by the direction of the Commissioners named on said decree, surveyed for the heirs of said Mordaica Morgan Dc’d 1606 1/4 A of land situate in Bedford County on both sides of Hunting Creek and on the North side of Goose Creek. Names: Christopher Morgan, Thomas Morgan, Rebecca Morgan, John Morgan, Catharine Morgan, Wesley Morgan, Elizabeth Morgan (The Dower), Jesse Morgan, Lucy Davis, wife of William T. Davis, and heirs of Permelia Lazenby, who was wife of John Lazenby. [7] Final accounting of the estate of Mordicai Morgan for the period 23 February 1829 thru August 1841 was produced by Christopher Morgan, Administrator, and was ordered to be recorded 22 October 1842. The accounting evidences the names of his spouse and children.[8]

Mordecai and his son, Thomas J, are said to be buried in the Morgan Family Cemetery, near the site of the mills and homestead on Hunting Creek. Roads no longer exist and the cemetery is now miles back in the forest.

Don't confuse Mordecai's wife Elisabeth Nichols, daughter of Nichols-9937, with the wife of Mordecai's brother: Elizabeth Blades who married 1st Nehemiah Nicholls and married 2nd Morgan Morgan.
