Biography

James Morgan was born on 8 May 1817 in Monongalia County, Virginia,^[1] the twelfth of thirteen children and the fifth of six sons of James and Dorothy Prickett Morgan.^[2]

James married Lydia Unknown, who bore him seven known children, five sons and two daughters,^[3] including a son whom they named Marcus.

1850 census

James Morgan appears in the 1850 United States Federal Census as a literate farmer with $1000 in real property, living with his literate wife, Lydia, seven children (five sons and two daughter), and an unidentified young woman, possibly a sister or sister-in-law. The two teen-age children are reported to have attended school the previous year but not the younger children of school age.
