John enlisted in the Confederate army on 12 Sep 1862 at Somerset, Pulaski, Kentucky. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 6th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry. He was captured by the Union army and imprisoned at Buffington (Camp Chase), Ohio, on 19 Jul 1863, and was sent on 22 Aug 1863 to Camp Douglas at Chicago, Illinois.[4][5][6]
After the war, the May family remained in Lewis county. They lived in Esculapia in 1870. Frances died at Esculapia Springs on 12 Jul 1871. John remarried and appeared with his family in Elk Fork in 1880. His second wife was the widowed Mary (St. Clair) Brooks (1839–1925).[7][8][9]

Lillian Viola May (1883–1905)
John died on 8 Feb 1895 and was buried in Mays Cemetery in Lewis County, Kentucky.[10]
