When Patrick Curtis May was born on March 17, 1794, in Connecticut, his father, Thomas May (1854-1911) and his mother, Mary Hamilton (1752-1819). He married Catherine Spence (1802-1870) on June 9, 1822, in Lewis, Kentucky. He died in 1871 having lived a long life of 77 years.
