Biography

Domenico Lima, son of Vincenzo Lima and Margherita la Barba, is born 23 September 1882 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Giuseppe Bentivegna and Maria Rosa Lima, a married couple. [1] His godmother is his newly wed sister.

On the Alesia, departing Naples and arriving in New York on 9 January 1899, are these passengers from Corleone:

13. Angelo Gagliano, 27 (b. 1872), single, going to brother Gagliano (no first name recorded) Angelo has $1000 (worth over $28,000 today[2]) and has been in the US before.

14. Bernardo Bentivegna, 17 (b. 1882), same (listed as male but this is his newly wed wife, Bernarda)

19. Vincenza Bilello, 39? (b. 1860) first digit is unclear. Says “Vincenza” but also Male. Married. Going to NOLA, joining son, Luigi. Has $30.

20. Domenico Lima, 16 (b. 1883). Going to NYC. Going to brother Gioachino (who is a fugitive).[3]

In the 1900 federal census of Manhattan, New York, taken 13 June, Casimiro Ruffino (“Rafino”), born in August 1852, age 47, heads a household at 330 East 74th St. with his wife Paula, born in May 1860, age 40, their sons Rosario, born in December 1881 (actually in March 1882), age 18, and Vincenzo, born in February 1885, age 15; and a boarder, Domenico Lima, born in May 1882 (actually, in September), age 18. They were all born in Italy and emigrated in 1899. Casimiro, Rosario, and Domenico are day laborers, Paula is a tobacco stripper, and Vincenzo is a barber.[4]
