Biography

Vincenzo Ruffino is the son of Casimiro Ruffino and Paola Lima, who married in Paola's native town of Corleone. Casimiro was born in Corleone of Cinisi residents, in 1852.

A primary record of Vincenzo's birth has not been found. His baptism does not appear in the index for Corleone. According to the record of his death, Vincenzo was born 30 August 1886. This does not match the birth month and year reported in the 1900 census: February 1885.

On the SS Sempione sailing from Naples on 22 December 1899 an arriving in New York on 2 January 1900, are these passengers from Corleone, all bound for New York:

22. Giuseppe Governali, 25 (b. 1875), single, shoemaker, joining brother Matteo at 337 106th St.

23. Casimiro Ruffino, 47 (b. 1853), married, carter, connected with bracket to lines 24-26, joining brother in law Gioachino Lima at 337 E. 106th St.

24. Paola Lima, 40 (b. 1860), married (entered as male but evidently not)

25. Rosario Ruffino, 17 (b. 1883), single

26. Vincenzo Ruffino, 14 (b. 1885)

27. Nicolo’ Saporito, 47 (b. 1853), married, shoemaker, joining brother Giovanni at 142 5th Av.[1]

In the 1900 federal census of Manhattan, New York, taken 13 June, Casimiro Ruffino (“Rafino”), born in August 1852, age 47, heads a household at 330 East 74th St. with his wife Paula, born in May 1860, age 40, their sons Rosario, born in December 1881 (actually in March 1882), age 18, and Vincenzo, born in February 1885, age 15; and a boarder, Domenico Lima, born in May 1882, age 18. They were all born in Italy and emigrated in 1899. Casimiro, Rosario, and Domenico are day laborers, Paula is a tobacco stripper, and Vincenzo is a barber.[2]

In the 1910 federal census of Manhattan, New York, taken 19 April, Casimiro Ruffino, 57 (b. 1852), heads a household at 2097 2nd Av with his wife of 32 years (m. 1878), Pauline, 50 (b. 1860), and their son Vincenzo, 25 (b. 1885). Paula has had 3 children, 2 living. All born in Italy and emigrated in 1899. Casimiro is a laborer in a plaster company and Vincenzo is a barber in a barber shop.[3]

The record of Vincenzo's marriage has not yet been found. His death record identifies him with the names of his parents, and his wife's first name, Anna. The names of his wife and children and their ages in the 1920 and 1940 censuses are close matches. His address in 1940 matches that on his death record.

Vincent and Annie have five known children: Vincenzo/Gus (c. 1914/5), Pauline (c. 1915/6), Annie (c. 1917), Josephine (c. 1919), and Carl (c. 1920).

In the 1920 federal census of New York City, taken 9/10 January, “Vincon Ruffino” heads a household at 160 106th St. Vincenzo is 34 (b. 1885): he and his wife Annie, 27 (b. 1892), are both entered as widows. Their children are “Vincon” (Vincenzo Ruffino, the younger), 5 (b. 1914), Pauline, 4 (b. 1915), Annie, 2 (b. 1917), and Josephine, 1 (b. 1919). Vincenzo immigrated in 1901 and his wife in 1903. The children were born in New York. Vincenzo, the elder, is a barber employed in a store.[4]

In the 1940 federal census of Queens, New York, taken 23 April, Vincent Ruffino, 54 (b. 1886), heads a household at 116-12 Rockaway Beach Blvd with his wife Anna, and children Gus, 25 (b. 1915), Carl, 20 (b. 1920), Pauline, 24 (b. 1916), and Josephine, 21 (b. 1919). Pauline and Josephine are finishers of sportswear. Carl has been unemployed for over a year.[5]
