Biography

Angelo Gagliano is born and baptized on 29 September 1869 in Corleone. He is the son of Giuseppe Gagliano and Maria Crapisi. His godfather is Cosimo di Miceli, who is unmarried.[1]

When Angelo and his new bride migrate to New York in 1899, Angelo indicates on the manifest that he was in the US nine years previous. A manifest naming Angelo Gagliano, age 20 (b. 1869), as a passenger has been found: the SS Bolivia, arriving in New York on 4 November 1889.[2]

Angelo marries Bernarda Bentivegna, daughter of Giuseppe Bentivegna and Maria Rosa Lima, on 6 November 1898 in Corleone, where bride and groom are both native residents. His father has died.[3]

The newlyweds emigrate two months later.

Angelo Gagliano, reportedly age 22 (he is 30), appears on the manifest of alien immigrants sailing from Naples on the SS Alesia and arriving in the port of New York on 9 January 1899. Also traveling at this time from Corleone is Bernarda Bentivegna, age 17 (b. 1881) (who is listed as a male, Bernardo). Both are single laborers who paid their own passage. Angelo has $1000 (worth over $28,000 today[4]) and has been in the US before. "9 years" it says in the box regarding his previous stay. Perhaps he was there nine years ago, or has been there for the past nine years. He is joining his brother Gagliano (no first name given) in New York. Bernarda has $10 and has also been in the country before. She is going to meet the same person. On the same voyage is sixteen-year old Domenico Lima, joining his brother, the fugitive Gioachino.[5]

Angelo and Bernarda have at least three children: Giuseppe/Joseph, (c. 1901), Mary (c. 1903), and John (c. 1908).

Giuseppe is born 3 July 1900 in Manhattan. His father is 31 (b. 1869) and his mother is 20 (b. 1880).[6]

John dies at age 7 on 31 October 1916 in Manhattan. This record gives his birth date as 8 November 1908.[7]

Giuseppe/Joseph dies at age ten on 5 January 1911 in Manhattan.[8]
