Robert was born around 1850 in what is now Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Frederick King and Nancy Crawford.
His family moved to St. Lawrence, New York sometime around 1858-1860 when Robert was 8-10 years old [1].
Sometime between then and 1868 the family had moved again to Oconto, Wisconsin He was living with his brother James, his wife Nellie, and their son Eddie [2]
He met Annie Johnson and married her in 1872[3].
