Ila was born in 1913 in Durham, Durham County, North Carolina.[1] She was the daughter of Weldon King and Maggie Woods. In the 1930 census, she's 16 and still at home with her mother and father in Alamance County, North Carolina.[2] She married Lucius Tilley of Durham in 1931[3], but by 1937, the Burlington city directory lists her and her husband as living separately,[4] and in the 1940 census, she's divorced and boarding in the Isley household.[5] She married again, taking the surname Ray, though no marriage record has been found. In 1951, she's listed as Ila Ray on two trips from and to Panama via ship through New York, New York, so perhaps she married there?[6][7] Ila died from a stroke on November 25th, 1973, with her death certificate listing her as a widow.[8] She was buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina.[9]
