When James Edward King was born on 16 October 1878, in Māwhera - Greymouth, West Coast, New Zealand, his father, William King, was 31 and his mother, Clara Ann Hughes, was 26. He married Mabel Gertrude Fearn in 1900, in Hastings, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. He died on 30 July 1956, in Wellington, New Zealand, at the age of 77.
