William King was the eldest son of Peter King, 7th Lord King, Baron of Ockham and his wife Lady Hester Fortescue. [1] He was born on the 21st of February 1805. [1] He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.[1]
He was married twice, firstly to the Honourable Augusta Ada Noel formerly Byron, daughter of Anne Isabella Noel, the Baroness Wentworth and George Gordon Byron (later Noel), the sixth Baron Byron of Rochdale and noted poet. They were married on 8 July 1835 by special licence at Fordhook, Ada's mother's residence in Ealing and the marriage was entered in the register of St Mary, Ealing, Middlesex, England. [2] [3]
On the 30th of June 1838 William was created Earl of Lovelace and Viscount Ockham of Ockham in Queen Victoria's Coronation Honours list. The Barony of King of Ockham was merged with these honours. The title of Viscount Ockham became the courtesy title used by the heir of the Earl of Lovelace, and so was immediately bestowed upon his eldest son Byron. [2]
William and Ada were parents of:
Ada, Countess Lovelace, died 27 November 1852 in Marylebone.
In 1860, William's mother-in-law, Anne Isabella, the Baroness Wentworth died. Under the terms of inheritance of the lands and property of Thomas Noel the Second Viscount Wentworth, the heirs to this property (William and Ada's children) had to assume the name Noel. William changed his name to King-Noel by Royal Licence dated 29 September 1860. [4]
He married secondly, Jane Crawford Jenkins, daughter of John Jenkins and widow of Edward Jenkins, on the 29 March 1865 in Kensington, London, England. [1] [2] [5]
