Biography

The son of James Kelley Sr. and Susannah (McPherson) Kelley, William Kelley, Jr. was born in Ross County, Ohio in 1816.[citation needed] He married three times. He first married Harriet (Bateman') Kelley, marrying in Ross County, Ohio on December 27, 1838.[1] They had two children, Albert Kelley and Emily Kelley. According to family legend, William and his bride rode by horseback to Tippecanoe, Indiana almost immediately following the late December wedding, along with a party of relatives and friends.[2][3] His wife died in Tippecanoe, Indiana in 1846.

William Kelley remarried, marrying his cousin, Mary (Alexander) Kelley. the widow of Andrew Wile, marrying in Montgomery County, Indiana on August 3, 1847.[4] Their children include James Kelley, Margaret (Kelley) Knaur, and Louisa Kelley (1856-1858). For a time, William and Mary Kelley farmed alongside William's older brother, James, and his wife, Margaret, in Pine Township, Indiana, while his two children from his first marriage lived with his parents during that time.[5] By 1860, they had relocated to Prairie Township, Indiana;[6] his son, Albert, lived with him but his daughter, Emily, was not in the household at the time of the enumeration. His brother, James, and his family remained behind, with James passing away in Warren County in 1877.

His second wife passed away in Benton County, Indiana in 1869 and William married a third time, marrying Elizabeth (Liptrap) Kelley, the daughter of George Bright Liptrap and Catherine Linkswiler and widow of Henry C. Morgan (1822-1864), with whom she had ten children, only two of whom survived into early adulthood; her first husband passed away during the Civil War. William and Elizabeth Kelley married in Benton County, Indiana on September 25, 1870;[7] he was 54 and she was 39. They had one child together, Nettie (Kelley) Rucker, and made their home in Grant Township, Indiana, in Benton County.[8] In 1880, in addition to their daughter, Nettie, Mary's two surviving children, Belle and Henry Morgan, lived with them in Grant Township, as did William's brother, Edwin, who never married.[9] William's brother, Edwin, remained with William and Mary after the children had grown and moved away.[10]

William Kelley passed away in Benton County, Indiana at the age of 91[11] and is buried at Smith Cemetery in Boswell, Indiana.[12]
