Biography

David E Jones was born in Dec 1830 in Pennsylvania and lived in Meadville, Crawford County, as a young man. He appeared in the household of Augustus Bradley in Meadville on the 1850 Census; David may have been Mr. Bradley's apprentice, as their occupations are both listed as "Chairmaker and Painter".[1]

David married Susana Brookhouser (1836–1924) and in 1860, they appeared in French Creek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, with two children: Albert (age 9) and Frances (age 4).[2]

David Jones and Susana Brookhouser had the following children:

  • Alice Frances (Jones) McCullough (1857–1921)
  • Georgie A (or Georgian) Jones (b. 1861)
  • Martha O (Jones) Fickel Sublet (1864–1900)
  • William Artemus Jones (1870–1958)
  • Bert Mac Jones (1878–1927)
  • Bessie Elnora (Jones) Pitzer (1881–1926)

About the close of the Civil War, David and his family settled in St John Township near Missouri Valley, Harrison County, Iowa. Their three younger children were born there. David ran his farm for many years.[3][4][5][6][7]

David died on 8 Aug 1902 of apparent heart failure and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. A report of his death appeared in the Missouri Valley Times on 14 Aug 1902.[8][9]
DEATH'S SUMMONS ARE SUDDEN
David E Jones Drops Dead While Viewing Farm.
David E Jones, for many years a prominent resident of this section of Harrison county, dropped dead yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock while returning to his residence in St John, after a visit to one of his wheat fields a short distance from the home.
Coronor Hennessy accompanied by several local doctors examined the remains and pronounced death due from heart failure. Mr Jones had not been in the best of health for several days past, but his illness did not prevent him attending to his work about the the [sic] farm. Yesterday afternoon, accompanied by one of his sons, he left the house and walking over to a wheat field spent some time looking over the crop prospects. While returning home Mr Jones observed several boys fishing along the bank of the Boyer river and started to walk towards them when without a seconds warning he suffered some peculiar attack. He fell backwards and was dead in less than a minute.
Mr Jones was 72 years old and had resided in St John Township about 35 years. He is survived by his widow and four children, two sons and two daughters. Funeral services conducted from the Jones home in St John tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Rev W L Douglas officiating.
