Biography

Edwin was born May 14,1839 in Old French Village, more recently known as Seabright, Halifax County, Nova Scotia to Alexander Hubley and Jane Catherine Comingo.

The home Edwin lived in on the Bay Road was originally meant to be a stop-over for travellers. Alexander, Edwin's Father, obtained this land and built this stop over for weary travellers to and from Halifax. It was called the 14 Mile House.

Edwin and Mary Jane were married December 5th, 1866 in Halifax by Baptist Lisence. Witnesses to the ceremony included A. Hubley, L. Byers with the Reverend J. Pryor officiating. He was 27 and she was 17.

Although the exact date of the house is as yet undetermined, a second house, almost directly across from the first, was built and also called the 14 mile house.(Note: Eventually his son Wellesley would build beside Edwin).

They raised their family at the 14 Mile House. He was a Hotel/Rooms Keeper, and Farmer who also ran a guide business for fishing and hunting. They kept a stable of horses. Eventually the local post office was operated from this location and he was Post-Master for approximately 40 years.

Edwin was the Enumerator in French Village, Halifax County Polling District #12 in the 1881 Census. His data collection, including penmanship, was exemplary.

Edwin sold his own liniment which appeared to be good for just about anything.(see picture) He was a man of great faith in God and imparted this faith to his family and in his everyday living.

Edwin spelled his surname Hubly as evidenced by his business card, Liniment advertisement and his signature on the 1881 Census Reports.

His written obituary records his surname Hubley. Edwin died at the age of 92 years, 7 months, 9 days at his residence at 14 Mile House, St. Margaret's Bay Road, Halifax County, Nova Scotia and was buried December 27, 1931 in Timberlea Cemetery, Halifax County, Nova Scotia.

This memory was Donald Cameron Hubley's-Edwin's grandson-my father. Dad said he remembers him as a kind and genteel old gentleman with a soft voice and kind eyes. He was a man who believed in God and whose faith was strong. He loved to write poetry

and I have included one he wrote about the loss of one of his children.
