U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
James Hollingsworth was a North Carolina colonist.
1776 Project
Soldier James Hollingsworth served with Duplin County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
James Hollingsworth is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A056631.

Marriage[1]

  • Elizabeth Betsy Merritt (circa 1738-1851)

Children Children are either confirmed by the Daughters of the American Revolution profile,[1] or listed in the estate file of James,[2] or both.

  1. Charity (Hollingsworth), married John Swinson
  2. Ann (Hollingsworth) Carroll married John Carroll

Additional children are discussed, below; unfortunately, the estate file transcriber did not specifically delineate which children were in the estate file and distinguish how the females were named, particularly, so an additional workup that shows which children are proved by the estate file, and married names for any of the adult females, if specified, is needed.

Apparent Residence in Duplin County

Two census record indices place James Hollingsworth in Duplin County; however, we do not know to a certainty that these records did not belong to his son:

  1. 1780: US Census Reconstructed Records, 1660-1820: James Hollingsworth, Residence: 1780 Duplin County, North Carolina, United States: Ancestry Record 2234 #158230.
  2. 1783: North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890: James Hollingsworth, Residence: 1783 Duplin County, NC: Ancestry Record 3566 #16607847.

Estate Records

The estate file for James Hollingsworth has been located, and James Hollingsworth died before 31 Dec 1782. It is noted that because of the Duplin County domicile of his estate, the death location has been updated to Duplin County. (Please see a discussion of locations and dates in the research notes.)[2][3]

Abstract and Transcription of Estate File Inventory occurred 31 Dec 1782. A division of personal property occurred in April 1783. Vendue (sale) of the house occurred on 5 June 1783. Division of the estate occurred in Oct 1783.

Widow: Elizabeth/Elisa Hollingsworth. Signed her mark with a cursive E; therefore, she was likely literate.

10 Children total.[citation needed] (Five not of age), only 7 are named in the probate as "orphans".[citation needed] (Approximate vital dates and some marriage data shown is from FamilySearch.[citation needed])

  1. William Hollingsworth
  2. Sarah/Salley Hollingsworth
  3. Mary Hollingsworth (ca. 1767-1882), m. Needham Chesnutt
  4. Jacob Hollingsworth (b. c. 1780)
  5. Rachel Hollingsworth (b. c. 1761), not yet the wife of Benjamin Sasser (apparently betrothed)
  6. Ann Hollingsworth (b. c.1755), wife of Kedar Harrel or Harrell
  7. Hannah Hollingsworth (ca. 1760-1793), wife of Andrew Cox; end of children described in inventory; the following are additional children listed at FamilySearch (with approximate vital dates)

  • Fanny (female)
  • Rose (young female)
  • Toney (male child)

Research Notes

  • The DAR record[1] and the estate file[2] seem to be at odds in terms of birth location and death date and location; however, Duplin apparently did not exist in 1742, so New Hanover has been used as the birth location, (also noting in the categorization, Duplin County), on this profile, consistent with the DAR record. The James Hollingsworth who died after 13 Nov 1798 in Sampson appears to be mixed data, so the location and probate delimiter date are used on this profile, instead of the DAR death data.
  • Some DAR users have attributed a son, Henry Hollingsworth, who married Jane Chestnut; however, that relationship is noted as having an error in lineage by DAR.
  • User sherrieknelson on FamilySearch reports that the text provides vital dates for James Henry Hollingsworth, citing p. 495:
Griffin, A Ray, and Eloise F Potter. The Chesnutt family of southeastern North Carolina: descendants of Alexander Chesnutt of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1695-2003. 2003, p. 495. Kingsport, TN: A R Griffin Jr.

Thanks for all of the hard work on the transcription; I've placed some alerts and verbiage about the children - presently discussed in at least two places; unfortunately, we don't have the transcription of the estate file distinguished from random entries on FamilySearch that have no indications of sourcing to back them up; so what we need now is specific delineation of which children (adult and minor) were named in the estate file and how the females, particularly were named. Additional workup would show which children are proved by the estate file, and married names for any of the adult females, if specified.

Thanks for all of the efforts!

Best of luck in your searches.

If I could get the transcription, I'll be happy to go in to do the reconciliation and take out the extra verbiage and explanations that will become redundant :)

Hollingsworth-2007 and Hollingsworth-2123 appear to represent the same person because: no evidence is apparent that two sons were named James. The estate file, recently located at FamilySearch is the first real evidence that is accessible.
