Notes:
  • Information from DAR's online database (DAR-grs) should be verified against another source, which is usually easy to do if pension transcriptions are available. In this case, however, it may be that DAR is the more reliable of the two (see Research Notes, below).
  • The biography for this profile was created with citations following the words supported (e.g., born, married), which makes editing a bit odd. I left the original citations in place, added information with cited source(s) from a subsequent edit, and added additional citations from DAR records and pension applications. I still need to check information from FamilySearch sources. ~ Noland-165 12:45, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Biography

1776 Project
Private Henry Hollingsworth served with Duplin County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Henry Hollingsworth is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A056625.

Private[1] Henry Hollingsworth[2] was born[3] August 18, 1757, in Duplin county[4] (later Sampson County), North Carolina,[5] a son of Henry Hollingsworth and Mary Ann Murray.[6]

On September 21, 1777, in Duplin county, Henry married[7] Elizabeth Griggs.[4]

During the American Revolutionary War, Henry enlisted in the military, where he served with Captains Dickson, Dodd, Faison, Ward, Pikkin, and Thompson, under the command of Colonel Kenan and Colonel Moore.[4] His initial service was for 3 months in 1777, with additional service later.[5] His brother Zebedee Hollingsworth also served.[8]

Henry Hollingsworth died[9],[10] November 16, 1840 in Sampson County, North Carolina, United States.[4],[5]

Research Notes

Henry is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A056625. DAR records indicate that he died November 16, 1840, in Sampson county, North Carolina.[4] (Note: Sampson County was established in April of 1784 by the North Carolina General Assembly from an area taken from neighboring Duplin County. Land from Wayne and New Hanover counties would be annexed later.)

Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his sons, Zebulon Hollingsworth, who married Mary Winders; Guilford Hollingsworth, who married Rebecca Carlton; Leonard Hollingsworth, whose wife was Catharine (?nee); and of his daughters: Elizabeth Hollingsworth, who married Jacob Hollingsworth; Frances "Fanny" Hollingsworth, who married William Smith; and Nancy Hollingsworth, who married Bennett W. Ballard.[4]

Children in Pension Records

The pension transcriptions would appear to contradict DAR records, but the list of children in Zebedee's application[8] includes his brother Henry's children (listed also in Henry's application),[5] which is apparent based on the marriage date of Zebedee and his wife (also an Elizabeth), as included in his file from when she applied for a widow's pension, "stating that she is the widow of Zebedee Hollingsworth,... that she married said Zebedee Hollingsworth in January 1785".[8] Her maiden name was Chestnutt.[11]
The transcription of Henry's pension application file includes the following children, with a note "[wife not named in the file]":[12][5]
  1. Fanny born July 1, 1778[5]
  2. Zebulon born June 29, 1781[5]
  3. Nancy born [record torn][5]
  4. Lynnard born July 28, 1783[5]
  5. Elizabeth born June 5, 1785[5]
  6. Henry born May 1, 1793[5]
The transcription of Zebedee Hollingsworth's pension application includes his children by Elizabeth, from the same source (family bible record), as provided by Zebedee's son Jacob, who testified for his mother, Zebulon's widow (who says they married in 1785). The list includes the same children/dates as 1-5 above, and others (whose dates would allow for them to be Zebulon's children).[8]
Zebedee's application also includes "other data in bible record" that includes the line:
  • Henry the Son of Henry & Elizabeth Hollingsworth His Wife was Born May the first Day 1793[8]
This supports that Henry's wife was also named Elizabeth, although she was not named in his pension application.

Zebulon Hollingsworth

Zebulon's DAR record shows his wife as Elizabeth Chestnutt.[11]
Information from the transcription of Zebedee Hollingsworth's pension file about his widow's subsequent application.[8]
[On August 22, 1839, in Sampson County, NC, Elizabeth Hollingsworth, 72 (as of 27th February last), filed for a widow's pension stating that she is the widow of Zebedee Hollingsworth, a pensioner of the United States at the rate of $42.50 per annum; that she married said Zebedee Hollingsworth in January 1785; and that her husband died on April 22, 1836.]
[On Jan. 16, 1840, in Sampson County, NC, Henry Hollingsworth, brother of the applicant, gave an affidavit in support of the claim of Elizabeth the widow in which he states that his brother's real name was Zebulon Hollingsworth, but his claim was granted under the name Zebedee Hollingsworth.]
[Nancy Chesnutt gave a supporting affidavit.]
[Jacob Hollingsworth, 59, son of Zebulon and Elizabeth, gave an affidavit in support of his mother's claim for a widow's pension. His affidavit is dated Nov. 19, 1839 and filed in Sampson County, NC. Attached to his affidavit is the family's bible record. Bible record of births of children of Zedebee and Elizabeth Hollingsworth... [see previous section ]

Hollingsworth Children

Seeing the actual Bible record[13] would help. The following list includes children listed by DAR, the pension applications, and WikiTree (as of 15 August 2020) for both Henry and Zebulon (Jacob may be a grandson). The transcription of the Bible records in Zebedee's pension file offer strong evidence that Henry born May 1, 1783 is Henry and Elizabeth's son and that Anney, born 1779, is Zebulon's daughter.[8][13]
  1. Fanny born July 1, 1778[5][8][13]
  2.  ? (Henry's wife was "in a state of pregnancy" during his May-Aug 1779 tour - perhaps Jacob?)[5][13]
  3. Jacob Hollingsworth born c1780[8]
  4. Zebulon born June 29, 1781[5][8][13]
  5.  ? (Henry went on an 8-day furlough in September 1781 - "his wife being expected to be confined")[5][14]
  6. Nancy born [record torn][5]
"Nansey born 22nd January [? worn and torn]"[8][13]
  7. Lynnard born July 28, 1783[5][8][13]
  8. Elizabeth born June 5, 1785[5][8][13]
  9. Eve born June 10, 1886 [sic][8][13]
  10. Jonney born September 21, 1788[8][13]
  11. Polloy [sic] born April 1, 1791[8][13]
  12. Henry born May 1, 1793[5][8][13]
  13. Gilford Hollingsworth was Born the 7 [?] November 1795[8][13]
  14. Henry born December 25, 1796[8][13]
  15. Anny born January 13, 1799[8][13]
Zebulon's children per DAR records (dates from descendant records, which are less reliable):
  • Edith "Edy" Hollingsworth married Joseph Carroll[11] (1784)
  • Jenney "Jane" Hollinngsworth married Richard Colwell[11] (1788)
  • Stephen Hollingsworth married (1) Elizabeth Colwell, (2) Perlina Fulford[11] (1794)
Henry's Children per DAR records (dates from descendant records, which are less reliable):
  • Zebulon Hollingsworth married Mary Winders[4] (1781)
  • Nancy Hollingsworth married Bennett W Ballard[4] (1782)
  • Elizabeth Hollingsworth married Jacob Hollingsworth[4] (1785)
  • Leonard Hollingsworth married Catharine [unknown][4] (1785)
  • Frances "Fanny" Hollingsworth married William Smith[4] (1778)
