Biography

Joseph Hallett of Hell Gate, Newtown, Queens, New York, married, first, Lydia Blackwell, by whom he had at least nine or ten children.

Lydia died before 22 August 1728, on which date Joseph was married, second, to widow Mary (Lawrence) Greenoak, by Rev. Thomas Poyer of the Parish of Jamaica, at Hell Gate.^[1]

Joseph's family was baptized in at least three batches. Joseph and Lydia and their children Joseph, Moses, Mary and William were baptized along with some extended family members by Rev. Poyer at Hell Gate on 6 August 1713.^[2] Secondly, on 7 January 1729/30, Thomas, Jacob, James, Samuel and Sarah, children of Joseph and Lydia Hallett, and Nathaniel, son of Joseph and Mary Hallett, were baptized along with extended family members, again at Hell Gate, again by Rev. Poyer.^[3] Lastly, Richard, son of Joseph and Mary Hallett was baptized by Mr. Poyer on 25 July 1731 at Newtown.^[4]
