Biography

Joseph Hallett was born perhaos around 1704^{[citation needed]} to Joseph Hallet and Lydia Blackwell^[1] in Newtown, Queens, New York. He was baptised along with his parents and several siblings "at Hell-Gate" in August of 1713.^[1]

Joseph married someone named Lydia in or before 1731.^[2]

It has been asserted she could have been a Lydia Alsop,^[3] but evidence suggests she wasn't Thomas Alsop's daughter of that name.

They had two children:

• Joseph Hallett, bap. 25 April 1731^[2][4]
• Lydia Hallett, b. 1732^[4][5]

Joseph died in 1731,^[6] intestate, before their daughter Lydia was born. Richard Alsop, Joseph's "principal creditor", was assigned by the court as administrator of Joseph's estate, Lydia having renounced administration,^[7] and Thomas Alsop and Jacob Blackwell performed the inventory and appraisal thereof.^[8]

The inventory included one "negro boy", valued at £26.
