Biography

Jabez Gillam, son of John Gillam and his wife, Elizabeth Dowlen of Denwood Cottages, Cowfold was born in about 1831. ^[1] He was apprenticed to Luke Wadey master carpenter of Five Oaks, Billingshurst in Sussex with whose family he was living at the 1851 census. ^[2] Apprenticeship completed he married Ann Wadey at St George, Southwark in 1854. ^[3] How she was related to Luke Wadey has not yet been determined. By 1861 they were living at Stoke, Guildford with three children. ^[4]

In 1871 Jabez was lodging with Martin Wadey, another carpenter, at Reigate. Ann was lodging at Croyden with two of the children, William and Ann, and earning a living as a dressmaker. In 1881 Jabez was lodging with Edward Hall another carpenter at Leslie House, Church St, Dorking while Ann was living with their son, William, and his wife at Sutton.

Ann died in 1884 ^[5] and, the following year, Jabez aged 54 married Elizabeth Duffel, daughter of George Duffel and his wife, Elizabeth Cook. The marriage was registered at Reigate. Two sons were born to Jabez and Elizabeth. At some time after 1891 ^[6] Jabez gave up carpentry and he and Elizabeth ran a laundry business. ^[7]

Elizabeth died in 1904 ^[8] and was buried at St Michael Betchworth with out the Church of England service. ^[9]

Jabez died in 1914 aged 85 ^[10] and was buried at St Michael, Betchworth on the 18th of February.
