Biography

Born at Cowfold in Sussex Joseph Gillam was son of John Gillam and his wife, Elizabeth Dowlen. ^[1] He became a carpenter like his father.

On 13 February 1848 at St Nicholas in Brighton he married Mary Ann Davy. ^[2] They made their home in Henry Street.^[3] By 1861 however they had moved to Plumstead in Kent. ^[4]

By 1871 Joseph was back in Brighton without his wife or his daughter, Grace. He was living with his brother, Jesse, in Dawson Rd. ^[5] Mary and Grace have not been located in the 1871 Census. Ten years on and he was an inmate in the Cuckfield Union Workhouse. ^[6]

Joseph died in the summer of 1891. ^[7]
