Biography

Maestro Salvatore Gagliano is born around 1811 in Corleone, the son of Maestro Angelo Gagliano and Francesca Mule'.

In 1834, Maestro Angelo, 60 (b. 1774), his wife Francesca, 51, and their unmarried children Salvatore, 23 (b. 1811), Anna, 21 (b. 1813), Biagia, 19 (b. 1815), Paol(o/a), 16 (b. 1818), and Maria, 10 (b. 1824), live on the Strada di San Leoluca in Corleone.[1]

Salvatore (not yet a maestro) marries Leoluchina lo Bosco on 16 September 1861. His parents have both died by this time.[2]

Salvatore and Leoluchina have at least two children, Angelo (1862) and Calogero (1864). The boys are named after their paternal and maternal grandfathers, respectively as is traditional.

Angelo is born 12 November 1862 and baptized the next day, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Maestro Angelo Gagliano and Bernarda Arsena, a married couple.[3]

Calogero is born and baptized 23 October 1864, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Ciro di Peri and Maria Monreale, a married couple. This is the first record found that calls Salvatore a maestro.[4]

Both sons are named in a list of active leadership in the mafia in Corleone around 1900.[5]

Angelo marries Giovanna di Miceli on 2 February 1902. Salvatore has died by this time.[6]

Calogero marries Giuseppa Lanza, a widow, on 18 October 1906.[7]
