"The entry reads: William Evens of South-Newton in the Countey of Oxford Tooke to Wiffe Jane Hodges the [blank[ day of the 8th month 1663". It looks much more like Hodges than Hedges. The entry in the contemporary index in the book however pretty clearly read "William Evens & Jane Hedges", so take your pick."
"8th month of course is October, not August, in pre 1752 Quaker dates."
"Evidence: the Hedges family of Great Tew, Oxon. I worked out an extensive family tree from wills and the parish registers. The earlist progenitor is Dyonis (spelled phonetically "Deanes" in the register, but pronounced "Dee-onnis" or "Dee-oneese" as it is found later in the same register spelled "Dyonise" - a pre-cursor of Denise? It is a name occasionally found in 16th and 17th century registers) - buried 8 Nov 1648, widow, of Great Tew.
Her children were:
William Hedges - md. ca. 1615 Frances; he was of Great Tew. (Wm. and Frances had children Wm., Thos., Amy; Frances; Dyonise; Ann) John Hedges - md. Elenor Poole 17 Feb 1616/1617 at Gt. Tew Ann Hedges - md. John Marshall 27 Sept 1613 at Gt. Tew Elenor Hedges - md. Hugh Rimell (had son John Rimell bapt. 1622) THOMAS HEDGES - md. Nov 19 1621 at Gt. Tew to JANE SLEAMAKER (also sound as Sleymaker) She was possibly the dau. of George/Elizabeth Sleymaker of Gt. Tew. Thomas Hedges was buried 8 Apr 1646, "of Little Tew."
Thomas and Jane Hedges had these children:
William bapt 7 Sept 1623 at Gt. Tew.
