Maria Rosa di Miceli, the daughter of Emmanuele di Miceli and Teresa Piazza, is born on 24 February 1855 in her parents' home on via San Nicolo' in Corleone.[1] Rosa is named after her maternal grandmother. She is born on February 24, 1855. Her godparents are Liborio Saporito and his wife (unreadable).[2]
She marries trafficante (merchant) Giuseppe Battaglia, son of the late Domenico Battaglia and the living Providenza Bologna, on 27 April 1870.[3] She is fifteen years old.
Giuseppe is identified as the leader of the Fratuzzi, the Mafia in Corleone, around 1900-19.
Maria Rosa and Giuseppe have at least eleven children: two daughters named Providenza (1871 and 1872), Orsola (1876), Maria Teresa (1879), Giovanna (1882), Maria Domenica (1884), twins Marianna and Francesca (1889), Maria Assunta (1892), Emmanuele (1895), and Giuseppa (1898).
The first daughter named Providenza is born 26 January 1871 and baptized two days later, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Antonino di Miceli and Rosalia Crapa.[4] She dies on 2 February, at one week of age.[5]
A second daughter named Providenza is born 1 March 1872 in Corleone and baptized on 4 March. Her godparents are Vincenzo Merendino and Francesca Colletti, a married couple.[6]
Orsola is born 8 November 1876 in Corleone and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Giuseppe di Miceli and Giuseppa Rao, a married couple.[7]
Maria Teresa is born on 1 October 1879 in Corleone and baptized two days later. Her godparents are Antonino Streva and Lucia Jovino, who are both unmarried.[8] Antonino marries Lucia’s sister, Giovanna, later that month.
Giovanna is born 16 February 1882 and baptized the next day in Corleone. Her godparents are Leonardo Provenzano and Providenza Battaglia, the unmarried daughter of Giuseppe.[9]
Maria Domenica is born and baptized on 10 August 1884 in Corleone. Her godparents are Paolo Piazza and Marianna Berlingeri, a married couple.[10]
Twins Francesca and Marianna are born 17 October 1889 and baptized two days later. Francesca's godfather is Giuseppe lo Bue, an unmarried man from Prizzi.[11] Marianna's godfather is Salvatore Sclafani.[12]
Maria Assunta is born in August 1892 to Giuseppe Battaglia, trafficante (merchant), and Maria Rosa Di Miceli. They live at via Piazza, 33. The midwife reports her birth as Giuseppe is out of town.[14] She is baptized 3 September.[15] Maria Assunta is baptized 3 September 1892 in Corleone. Her godparents are Giovanni Cammarata and Lucia Jovino, a married couple.[16] Like her father, her godfather and his brother-in-law, Michelangelo Gennaro, are active in the Fratuzzi, the Mafia in Corleone.
Providenza marries Giuseppe di Palermo on 23 November 1892 in Corleone.[17]
Emanuele is born in October 1895 in Corleone, the son of Giuseppe Battaglia, trafficante (merchant), and Maria Rosa Di Miceli. They live at via Piazza, 33.[18] He is baptized 6 June 1896 in Corleone. His godfather is Don Vito Cascioferro, of Palermo.[19]
