Biography

Antonino Bene, the son of unknown parents, is born in Trapani and is found in a foundling wheel on 28 August 1839. He is truly abandoned, as he is not left with any signs of recognition that are sometimes left by mothers in order to reclaim the children years later.[1][2] He is a resident of Corleone from childhood and is later known as Antonino Streva.

Antonino marries at least twice, first to Giovanna Jovino (Iovino), daughter of Filippo Jovino and Anna Maria di Palermo, on 27 October 1879.[3] Giovanna, a housewife (donna di casa) residing on via Macaluso #104, dies on 5 February 1883 in Corleone.[4]

A year later, Antonino remarries to Lucia Puccio, daughter of Giuseppe Puccio and Giovanna di Bella, on 25 February 1884.[5] Antonino Bene, who is called Antonino Streva, a widow, age 44 (b. 1840), borgese, born in Trapani, resident of Corleone, son of unknown parents; and Lucia Puccio, age 33 (b. 1851), housewife, born and resident of Corleone, daughter of Giuseppe Puccio and Giovanna Di Bella, residents of Corleone; announce their intention to marry in the civil record of Corleone on 24 February 1884. The witnesses are Giuseppe Fontanetta, age 38 (b. 1846), a barber, and Benedetto Sabatino, age 25 (b. 1859), a shoemaker.[6]

Antonino and Lucia have at least four children: Maria Cristina (1885), Salvatore/Charlie (1888). Jennie (c. 1891), and Bennie (c. 1896).

Maria Cristina is born 5 January 1885 and baptized five days later. Her godfather is the unmarried Carmelo Pennino.[7]

Salvatore is born 12 September baptized 19 September 1888 in Corleone. His godfather is Biagio Puccio, who is unmarried.[8]

In the 1900 federal census of Manhattan, Tony Streva, 56, born in September 1843, heads a household on E. 107th St with his wife, Lucia, 40, born in December 1859, and son Charlie, 11, born in September 1888. Lucia has had 4 children, 2 surviving. All born in Italy, all came in 1890. Tony is a banker.[9] The other three children Lucia has had by 1900 are Maria Cristina, who has probably died, Jennie, and Bennie, who both appear in the 1905 census.

In the 1905 New York state census, taken 1 June, Antonio Streva, 56 (he is the same age as in 1900), a banker, heads a household at 309 E. 107th St. with his wife, Lucy, 40 (she is the same age as in 1900), and children Jennie, 14 (b. 1891), and Bennie, 9 (b. 1896), all born in Italy. Jennie is a dressmaker. Antonio has been in the US for 8 years (imm. 1897) and the rest of his family for 7 (imm. 1898).[10]

In the 1906 city directory for New York City, Antonino Streva is listed at 315 E 106th St.[11]

In 1908, Charles Salvatore Streva immigrates, leaving his father, Luciano, in Corleone. Salvatore is joining his uncle Antonino Streva at 318 E. 106th St.[12] This suggests Antonino is Luciano's brother. Luciano's father, Salvatore, married in 1848.

In the 1912 city directory for New York City, there are listings for:

Antonino Streva, agent, 307 E. 107th St.

Chas, clerk, living at 205 E. 118th St.[13]

In the 1915 New York State census, Anthony Streva, 63 (b. 1852), heads a household on East 107th St. with his wife Lucy, 56 (b. 1859), and daughter Joanna, 19 (b. 1896), all born in Italy. Anthony is a ticket agent in a bank, working on his own account. His daughter is employed as a shirtmaker.[14]

In the New York City directories for 1916 and 1917, Antonino is listed as a steamship ticket agent with offices at 307 East 107th Street, and living nearby at 101 E. 107th St.[15][16]
