Alfred Deakin was born on the 3rd of August 1856 at Collingwood, Colony of Victoria to William Deakin and Sarah Bill, who arrived in Australia in 1849.[1]
The Deakins originally came from Staffordshire, although Alfred's grandfather, John Deakin, moved around England as a revenue collector, eventually settleing at Witney in Oxfordshire. Other names in the tree include Cross and Howcroft. Alfred Deakin's mother Sarah Bill was from Llarnarth, Monmouthshire, although her father William Augustus Bill was born at Brosely in Shropshire. Other names in her tree include Jones and Bagnell.
Arthur Deakin married 19 year old Elizabeth Martha Anne (Pattie) Browne in 1882, In the Colony of Victoria.[2] They would go on to have 3 daughters: Ivy, Stella and Vera, who were born between 1883 and 1891 while Deakin was a member of the Victorian Parliament.[3]
Alfred Deakin died at his home at South Yarra, Victoria, Australia, on the 7th of October 1919, aged 63.[4] His official cause of death was given as meningoencephalitis. He was granted a state funeral at Queen's Hall in Parliament House, Melbourne, after a period lying in state. He was interred next to his parents in the non-denominational section of St Kilda Cemetery, joined by his widow Pattie following her death in 1934.[5]
