Sir George Houston Reid, GCB, GCMG, PC, KC, was the fourth Prime Minister of Australia and held the position for ten months and 17 days. He had been Australia's first Federal Leader of the Opposition, Premier of New South Wales (1894-99) and later the Federal Government's first High Commissioner to the UK (1909-16), and later an independent member of the British House of Commons (1916-18).
George Reid was born on 25 February 1845 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was one of seven children of Reverend John Reid, a Presbyterian minister, and Marion Crybbace.[1] The family migrated to Melbourne in 1852 aboard the Martin Luther, one of many Presbyterian families brought out to Australia by the Rev Dr J.D. Lang.
He married on 5 November 1891, Flora Ann Brumby, daughter of a Tasmanian farmer, at the Presbyterian manse, Wangaratta, Victoria.[2]
Sir George Reid passed away in London on the 12th of September 1918, aged 73, of cerebral thrombosis.[3] He was survived by his wife and their two sons and daughter. He is buried in the Putney Vale Cemetery, in Wimbledon London.
