This category contains profiles of members of the numerous Australasian Federation Conventions.

1. A Convention in Melbourne in 1890. (see the Free Space page 1890 Australasian Federation Conference)

2. The 1891 Constitutional Convention was held in Sydney in March 1891 - There were 46 delegates at the Convention, chosen by the seven colonial parliaments which included New Zealand. (see the Free Space page 1891 AUSTRALASIAN FEDERATION CONVENTION)

3. In January 1895 A Premiers' Conference was held to arrange the upcoming Australasian Federal Convention. (see the Free Space page 1895 Premiers Conference in Hobart Tasmania)

4, 5 & 6. This later Australasian Federal Convention was held in stages in 1897–98 with out New Zealand or Queensland's involvement.

It met first in Adelaide in March 1897.
secondly in Sydney in August 1897.
thirdly in Melbourne in January 1898.

7. A further Premiers' Meeting was held in January 1899 in Melbourne, Victoria to ratify the agreement.

Note:

  • Political movements to federate the Australian colonies grew to prominence in the mid 19th century. But they all lapsed or failed to find popular support due to the tensions between the smaller and larger Colonies."
  • In 1889 the Federal Council of Australasia was established. It arose out of a fear of the growing presence of German and French colonies in the pacific, and a growing Australian identity. The council could legislate on certain subjects but did not have a permanent secretariat, an executive, or independent source of revenue. Perhaps most problematically New South Wales, the largest colony, did not join the body.
  • There were also two so-called People's Conventions held: one in Corowa in 1893 and Bathurst in 1896.

These were all precursors to the eventual Australasian Federation Conventions and the current Commonwealth of Australia.
