François Cormier, born 9 October 1719, son of Pierre Cormier & Catherine LeBlanc, baptized same day. Godparents: Claude Arsenau & Catherine Cormier.[1][2].
"Francois Cormier, son of the deceased Francois Cormier & Catherine Le Blon, married on 2 July 1742 Anne Chiasson, daughter of Jacques Chiasson & Marie Arssenaud, inhabitants of this parish. Witnesses: Prudent Robichaud; Jean Clemenseau" in Beaubassin, Acadia[3][4][5]
In 1763, François and Anne were residing at Tracadie, Isle Saint-Jean (present-day Prince Edward Island) with 8 other families. They were on a list of Acadians wishing to be repatriated to a territory administered by France. [6] Nine children were counted, but not named on the list. [10] The majority of the inhabitants of Tracadie, many of them from the Chiasson clan, left for the French colony of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon in the summer of 1765, except for François and his family who stayed, but these families returned to Isle Saint-Jean within 2 years, dissatisfied with the conditions there. In 1772 records show François and his sons François, Jean, Basile and Nicolas leasing land from David Higgings in Trois-Rivières (near present-day Lower Montague, Prince Edward Island). From there, François probably returned to Tracadie where his sons François and Basile were residing in 1787. These two would later settle in Chéticamp. [11]
Research Notes
François' death was listed in this profile in Margaree, Colony of Nova Scotia about 1780, without any source to support this claim. Stephen White in the Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes, Michael Melanson in his book Cormier Genealogy, as well as several reliable family trees, do not give a date or location for François' death.
