Biography

Anna Felicia Castro is born and baptized 30 January 1814, named after her maternal grandmother. She is the daughter of Calogero Castro and Giuseppa Monteleone. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Antonina Grizzaffi, a married couple.

Felicia marries Antonino Milone on 28 April 1833. They have two known children, Maria Carmela (1834) and Giuseppa (1838).

Maria Carmela is born and baptized on 24 February 1834. I believe Maria Carmela is named after her paternal grandmother, who is called Carmela in the records of Felicia and Antonino's marriage, and in his death record. Her godparents are Pietro d'Anna and Vincenza Milone, who are not married.

In 1834, Antonino, 26 (b. 1808), wife Anna Felicia, 23 (b. 1811), and daughter Carmela, 1 (b. 24 Feb 1834), live in a street off the Strada di Porto Salvo, near a courtyard.[1]

By this time, Felicia's brother, Giuseppe, known as "Rapanzino," a notorious cattle rustler, is wanted by the police.

In 1837, Felicia's husband, Antonino, and his brother, Leoluca, are both convicted for their parts in a violent Republican uprising, at the height of the cholera epidemic. Leoluca leads a mob that kills four. Antonino's crime is not clear, but the historian Don Giovanni Colletto tells us he was put into irons, while his brother, among about a dozen others, was executed.[2] (See "A stranger in this town" on Mafia Genealogy for more on this history.)

Giuseppa is born and baptized eight months later, on 27 March 1838, named after her maternal grandmother. Her godparents are Mariano la Magna, who is not married, and Giuseppa's sister Francesca Sabatino, wife of Michaele.

In June, Felicia takes in a foundling. Antonino is born of unknown parents and baptized on 11 June 1838. His godparents are Felice Catanzaro and Carmela Castro. The record says that Felix Castro, wife of Antonino Milone, takes the child in as wet nurse. Anna Felicia sustains the child, who lives in the home of the boy's godfather (possibly Catanzaro-17), in the San Leoluca quarter of Corleone.

She takes in another founding by the following year. Rosalia, an infant born of unknown parents, in the care of wet nurse Anna Felicia Castro, dies on 15 November 1839.

In 1840, Anna Felicia (called "Maria Felicia Sanzone" in this record), 27 (b. 1814), and their two children, Maria Carmela, 6 (b. 1834), and Giuseppa, 3 (b. 1838), live with her sister, Maria Carmela, 17 (b. 1823), on the strada di Catinella.[3] Antonio is evidently still imprisoned. He will return to Corleone before his death in 1872.

Giuseppa dies, reportedly at age five (actual age: four years and four months) on 22 August 1842.

Maria Carmela marries for the first time on 21 June 1849, to Domenico Pontina, a widower from Prizzi, when she is fifteen years old.

Maria Carmela marries for the second time in 1864.

Antonino dies at age 70 (b. 1802) on 19 June 1872.

Death of Anna Felicia

Anna Felicia dies at age 73 on 24 April 1887.
